It could be the needle that doesn't hold correctly on the axle!

Have you tried driving faster ?

Seriously have you noticed if there's a pin in your speedo face which prevents it going under 10 mph ?

There is no pin ! When I drive approx 80 mph the speedo creeps up to about 50 mph , if this wasn't a electric sensor I would say it was a old lack of lube in the cable , wishfull thinking , any more ideas ?? Thanks Elliot

    Elliot,

First, the pin that prevents needle travel below 10 mph is VERY SMALL AND THIN. I cannot see the pin on my gauges. It is Just too small.

Second, these gauges are NOT KNOWN for their accuracy. In fact, just the opposite. They are known for how bad they are, but reading 50 for 80 is just too low, agreed.

If the low reading is not due to the sending unit, have you checked the wire to ensure there is no exposed metal along its length (short to frame or near open)? If that proves OK, then it is likely one of the circuts in the speedo is going bad. Not good.

Run a few forum searches here. There is a guy or two that fixes speedos but I do not remember his real or F-Chat name. Sorry.

The other thing you could do is pull it and send it to Palo Alto Speedo in CA. They can likely rebuild it. They rebuilt my 1981 speedo and did a superb job. Be prepared for a little bit of "sticker shock" though.

    Good Luck !!!!

the needle in my car, 85 mondial QV was the same, no pin stopping it and it would not go below 10km, at 60 and 80kph it was always 10kph out, I replaced the sensor and still the same, in the end I removed the speedo and then removed the face of the speedo and gently removed the needle and reset it to zero, then I reinstalled the speedo and test drove the car checking the speed using 2 tom tom gps units, I got it to within 1 1/2kph

Can anyone explain why so many people here spend so much time and/or money trying to get their speedo to read zero ?

There are dozens and dozens of these threads yet not one that I can recall explains this weird obsession !

The mistake that Ferrari made was having a true linear scale on the gauge face. If you look at most modern speedometers, the needle is at 5~10 mph when the car is not moving, but the manufacturers cleverly just put the "0" label there -- and people seem much happier with that ;) Note on this Subaru Speedometer that the needle is not really at "0" (i.e., it has a non-linear scale) even though that position is labeled "0":
