Just wanted to share my new install of a true and classic Italian wood steering wheel. I always love wooden steering wheels on sports cars and decided to stray from original equipment. Let me know if you like it also. Pics below. Equipment details: Nardi Mahogany 390 mm wheel, Nardi to Momo hub adaptor, Ferrari Big Horn chrome piece (a work of art). Image Unavailable, Please Login
more pics... I love the look, will go well with my Daytona seats to come later.... Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Thanks guys! I'm looking for some good Daytona style seating for the Mondi but within budget, so looking at a few different approaches: 1st, keep existing seats, create my own inserts that will go in the middle with the stripes across. 2nd, aftermarket seats and covers from MrMikes.Com 3rd, cough up $2500 for original Ferrari Dino seat covers 4th, look for some used Daytona seats $5000 out of the question says wife... I like the steering wheel. Very cool. I don't know which seats would be the best but I really like the Daytona look. Lino
I like it too. My OLD Alfa had a wooden wheel and a matching wooden knob. so, I would get a matching wood shift knob,, with a Ferrari Crest. And, the seats will finish the look. Edwardo
If you don't mine me asking, is there a good inexpensive source for the steering wheel? Other than the high prices on the bay? Ace
Hi everyone, here are my mockups, but I'm still searching for a good upholstery guy that I can work with to design inserts to my existing Mondial seats. I will design a prototype before spending hundreds or thousands on this project. stay tuned... Image Unavailable, Please Login
If you buy the setup from Ebay in whole, its $1200-1700. I bought in separate peices, but cheaper if you know what to buy. This is the wheel I bought $300, but I also bought the chrome horn button which is $450: http://www.ebay.com/itm/PORSCHE-NARDI-WOOD-390-CLASSIC-NEW-STEERING-WHEEL-L-K-/380381897125?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr&hash=item58908721a5#ht_500wt_1413 You will also need the Nardi to MOMO adaptor to fit the Mondi steering hub. The hardest part was to fit the chrome horn peice on, took me 3 hours to figure it out, its real tricky. Good luck!
Nardi Classic wheel from a different angle in my garage, not bad at all! :~) Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
I might be interested in a set, depending on design/price. If it helps buying 2, vs 1. I also have a tan interior, so it would be identical. Thanks, Erik
Erik, I'm still deciding on my designs, so it will take some time. It might just be a total custom one of a kind if I have to make it myself, not sure yet but will post a followup when its progressing more along! Thanks, -Mike
...Thanks to all, I'm glad am not the only one that likes the wooden wheel! By the way, I actually think it handles and turns much better than the original. Because its a little bigger in diameter, therefore much easier to turn and this 3.2 does not have power steering so its a great advantage. The drive home today was awesome with the top down and sun shining on the chrome & wood Nardi and the center piece FERRARI HORN staring at me was just perfect! -Mike Image Unavailable, Please Login
The wooden one is similar in size to the Mondial 8 wheel, correct? Those big fat TRXs up front needed the extra leverage! Looks great, btw.
Great question. It is my least favorite thing about the OEM wheel. But Mike, I'm sorry I'm not a fan. I think the problem I have is the enormous amount of black dash and tan leather with no other real wood just makes me feel it's a little out of place on a late 80's Ferrari. But as long as you are happy, that is all that really matters. Enjoy.
Thanks Jay for your honesty, I know the wood steering wheel is not for everyone. I had the same Nardi wheel in my 96 Miata which I loved and had to have it for my Mondi. But in general, I'm just a sucker for a good Italian wooden steering wheel on any car! cheers!
I for one think it looks great. One of the first mods I did after getting my 3.2 was to install a new Nardi wood wheel. I went with the grooved trim ring instead of the big horn button. I think it adds a touch of elegance that was missing from the stock steering wheel. I also added the chrome shift knob that I think helps to balance out all the shininess of the new wheel.
