I sent an earlier thread about a thumping noise and no one had the problem. I was just sure it was a bad tire, but I replaced the driver side tires with no results. The car has only 200 miles on it. The dealer FCI in NC confirms after investigation they hear the sound and have a suspicion it is related to the brakes prefilling in anticipation of me braking. They do not have another 458 in stock to compare if it is just related to my car or not.

The next time you drive your Italia would you please notice upon reaching 55-60MPH let off on the gas and coast. Tell me if you hear a thumping sound between 50 down to 40mph or so. As soon as I apply a light throttle the sound goes away, but when I let off in that speed range it makes the noise every time.

It does not seem that anything is wrong except for the objectional sound, and is preventing me from getting full enjoyment from the car. The dealership and I would appreciate your comments. Thank you very much!

Woody my 458 does not make this sound. I am assuming the thumping is in rythm to the tire rotation. My car is one of the first to be brought in to the USA. I am not a mechanic so it is a guess on my part I would check the transmission mounts. Second I would check the engine mount. If that is not the problem I would have your dealer call Ferrari. They can plug in the car and be connected by computer to your vehicle and diagnose abs etc. Sounds like a brake disc is Warped from being overheated or you have a brake pad or Pads not retracting.

Sorry wish I could help more. Good luck

My car makes a clicking sound as the brakes pre-fill. It certainly isn’t a thump. Also I can hear the brakes pre-fill as low as 20mph.

Mine too but it sounds like a slight click/woosh sound just as I lift off the accelerator. It seems like it’s from the front right side and I’d admit it’s a tiny bit annoying. It does sound like it belongs and brake pre-fill makes sense.

Yep - took me a while to figure out what the hell that noise was! I agree it is slightly annoying. Mine also sounds like it is coming from the front right. Now that I know what it is it doesn’t bother me as much.

    Hi Guys,
Thank you very much for your thoughts. I still need help. For now the dealer has sent my car back as it was until they can compare to other cars or can figure out what is going on. I not only get thumping while coasting, but also in light steady throttle. HELP!

Again my 458 does not have that sound. I think you have a warped rotor. I would have the dealer raise the car so all 4 wheels are free. I would spin each tire and listen. I suspect you will pick out which rotor you are having the issue with.

I must admit I am surprised your dealer has not found the solution easlly, Hmm

    Good luck

Hey Woddy, saw your post, thought I would throw in my opinion on the noise...I know this is a pad to rotor noise...after unplugging the brake switch, thus disabeling the prefill function the buffering/resonence type noise would go away on decel until the brake was applied manually. I also noticed that I only began to hear the noise after the brakes were at operating temp confirming once again a pad to rotor noise. carbon ceramic brakes do have a tendancy to be quite a bit more noisy than your typical steel rotor brake set up. I did bleed the brakes to remove any possible air in the system with no luck on easing the buffering noise, checked runout on rotors for possible warpage which is highly unlikely on carbon ceramics and results showed no warpage or factory defects, I also did not notice any pulse in the brakes or vibration in the steering wheel which is a symptom of warped rotors. I will continue to stay on top of your concern checking the next 458 that comes in the shop and following up on all bullitens released. I also made sure everything was tight and in place so I do not see any safety concerns, I would try putting a few more miles on the car allowing the brakes a little more time to brake in. I am sorry for the inconvenience and I hope we can figure something out to rectify your concern.
