Years ago, my exterior mirror was very tight and I couldn't seem to easily swivel it into position as it resisted movement in any direction. I imagined there must be a friction plate inside and figured it was bound up, so I applied a few drops of my favorite lubricant, TriFlow, to the shaft and let it soak until the weekend. That weekend I discovered a disaster when I went to drive it - the darn mirror was so loose and floppy that it wouldn't hold any position when driving above 15 MPH. Well, this escalated things from a mere inconvenience to being nearly dangerous, so I had to fix it.

Once the mirror was removed from its mounting, I disassembled it and found the rotator ball housed in a friction cup with a pressure plate backing it. I removed the parts and cleaned off the Tri-Flow lubricant with brake cleaner and reinstalled the parts. The final friction of movement is set by the two phillip's head screws on the underside and I tightened them until I had the correct amount of resistance to easily move the mirror.

First photo is of an original Dino mirror and the Repro, second is the disassembled parts.
