I tried a search but couldn't find a specific thread that deals with removing the starter whilst the motor is still in the car, I looked today and it looks like a bear of a job.
I bought a Dino that has been off the road for several years, the VC joint boot has gone and the starter is covered in grease, when you crank the car over it sometimes works perfectly, then spins past and whirs or just clicks.
Any advise would be gratefully received
    Thanks

    Hey there,
Sold em both, Gethin's car and Eaton's car, they are in New Zealand now.
I sent the Eaton tub to England for a 3 month reskin, 12 months later I got it back, the guy who reskinned it made such a mess I lost heart.
The top of the curve over the dashboard was too short so he just banged it together, looked like it had a big dent in the top, the steering column couldn't attain the correct angle to reach down to the rack, it stuck virtually straight out the front. It meant pulling off the two horseshoe shaped skins which were glued and riveted in and starting again.
Duncan has the work for both cars now, he knows what he's doing.
I just went out and bought a 430 and swore I'd never restore another car, well, here I am a year later and I'm restoring an L series Dino!!!!

Ian - welcome to the club.

Changing the starter is not difficult, simply dirty and time consuming.

First, you will have to open the rear luggage compartment and remove the firewall that separates the engine compartment from the luggage compartment. If not previously removed, this will require drilling out a few rivets. You will have to remove the trunk lid and support cross bar that carries the engine lid latch. Simply swing it out of the way, do not cut the cable. The aluminum firewall will lift out (with a bit of tugging).

Second, as you will now have easy and open access to the rear exhaust header, loosen the header nuts off of their studs and decouple the header from the muffler. Remove or at least provide about 2 inches of clearance of the header from the head.

Finally, loosen the two bolts mounting the starter to the intermediate plate (bell housing) and remove the starter.

Unfortunately, there is simply insufficient clearance to remove the starter without loosening the header. Some, including myself, have replaced or are entertaining replacement of the stock starter with a modern gear-reduction starter. This will allow removal without removing the header. The modern starter is physically smaller.

My starter does exactly as yours does. It will spin without engaging the flywheel. It takes several to many attempts to get the car started. I am procrastinating, but soon to attack the issue.

    Hope this helps.

As Jim suggested it is a pain in the neck to change, getting the old one past the diff is rather tricky too, but it does come out.

Time out on the gear reduction starter, but Nerodino has bought one and it works really well.

Thanks for all of the great advice, it is a million times easier to remove when you have the right info, I pulled the started, the rear manifold and the exhaust silencer
Going to get the exhaust silencer bead blasted and repainted

Talking about "painting" exhausts. I had mine done a few years ago at a place called Camcoat here in UK

I think they are UK Agents for a US process. I can recommend this as being durable.
I also had a stainless steel exhaust made to the same shape as the original Ansa and then coated with the same material to make it look authentic.
