I find the Sport suspension setting suits my weekend driving best - not too firm like Race and not too soft like Bumpy Road. But I like the Race exhaust sound with the pipes open more than the choked off sound you get in Sport.

How hard would it be to modify the stock exhaust to be able to switch on (and off) Race sound in Sport mode? I've seen a car with the baffles able to be switched off altogether - and it sounded illegally LOUD at idle - but I'm happy with the Race sound with its baffled sound at idle.

I completely agree with you. It would be great if you switch on race sound in sport mode. Cuz of muffled sound in sport, i've been driving in race mode all the time, but the ride quality is not so great.

I bet the exhaust flaps are controlled electronically. If so it may be just a matter of removing the single fuse from the fusebox that controls them.
When I had my Aston Martin, they had the same set up where the flaps do not open until 4000+ rpm. It was a well known quick fix to pull ONE fuse out of the fusebox that SOLEY controlled those flaps. That's what I did and used the car for 2 years like that. It had absolutely no adverse effect whatsoever and even AM dealers would do it for customers.

Thanks, but I'm looking for a switchable solution. The car without the flaps is too loud to make it permanent.

Race setting isn't fully open either - but the flaps open earlier than in Sport.

The flaps are controlled by vacuum. If you want the car to be in "race mode" exhaust sound while actually being in "sport mode" you can drop the diffuser (8 bolts IIRC) and disconnect the vacuum lines where they are connected to the vacuum actuaries. It is important to plug the hoses with golf tees and then cable tie them up out of the way. The car sounds much different once done.

On the Audi RS4 the valves were controlled by a vacuum line and a lot of people would just unplug the line from the valve and then plug up the line so that you don't have a vacuum leak and the valves would stay open the whole time since they default to open when no vacuum is applied. A lot of people did this to get the louder sound that the sport mode gave you without having to press a button and change the mapping of the accelerator pedal. Plus even in sport mode it would close the valves under certain situations. I assume this would be possible on the 458 as long as you can get to the valve and unplug the line and cap it to prevent vacuum leaks.

But won't that remove the quiet idle and be non-switchable?

Yes it would just leave the valves open all the time, you can't get everything you want unless you do a lot more work.

Like he said. Yes, open all the time. Glorious.

(I might add that doing this will also drop a few pound feet of torque from the very lowest range of revs... maybe 10 -20 pounds at 1200 rpm. Far below where you need the power anyway.)

I just spoke to the owner I already mentioned who has a switch in the cabin to open and close the valves. He's very happy with the mod so I'll take that path. Then I can have a choice of quiet or noisy. The installer says about 4 hours work to wire it up. I'll report back next week when it's done. :)

We are in the Italia 458 section right?? How can we be talking about a bunch of money when we are dealing with cars that cost north of $300,000.00? Isn't that a little ridiculous? What a $1,000 mod gonna break the camel's back? It's like someone not putting on extra miles because of their depreciation concerns or what their service bill will be for the maintenance. Maybe its me but I figure if you're dropping 300K on your car drive like you own it and enjoy the car. Ok I'm done the rant.

Yes, but the "free" way won't achieve what I'm wanting - a switchable sound level that let's me drive quietly in town and past my neighbours, and an unholy racket once I'm free of civilization. :)

I would think many 458 owners would want this. Could develop into a nice little business.

Mark- Both Capristo and Kreissieg make bypass valve solenoids that have remote control of the exhaust valves. Capristo even has one that allows you to program when you want the valves to open and close, as opposed to the simpler, and less expensive, remote controlled solenoids which you can open and close at will.

I assume you have tried Race with the Damping Delink button and it was too soft?

    Thanks Taz

Yes, the Bumpy Road setting is great for commuting and touring but it is too soft once you start throwing the car around. And the default hard suspension in Race only works on smooth tar - which soon turns bumpy where I live.

It seems odd that Ferrari set it up this way. If pressing the Dampening button changes the suspension setting to Comfort when in Sport mode, you would think it would set it to Sport when in Race mode...i.e. one notch down. Then it's compliant enough to absorb larger bumps, but not too soft for aggressive driving and a sporty feel. If the road's really rough, then you probably don't need Race mode, anyway.

A cabin mounted switch is the way ahead. I have seen this done on a Scuderia and it looked factory as they used genuine factory switch mounted on one of the blanks next to the steering wheel, this may not work on the 458 due to the reduced switches in the cabin. Disconnecting the valves is fun but it can be incredibly annoying if you then want to quieten the car down for cruising at 70mph, less attention or quiet trackdays.

I fitted a remote control to the exhaust solenoid on my GT3 that runs a rear silencer bypass and it is the ideal solution. I used to run it fully open all the time and didn't think I would use the quiet function that much but I do all the time on the motorway or on quiet track days.

Ive always found it to be funny myself.

Thats really the way to go. The sound isnt effected much if the the valves are just being opened early. A good aftermarket exhaust is really the only way to improve the sound all the time, and one with valves and a remote will give full sound control.

Really not true and for the cost of fitting a switch its worth trying vs. $10k+ for a system.

The 458 is already seriously loud with the valves open.

Yeah, its worth trying but the valves open fairly early in sport mode so the sound doesnt change all that much.
