Hi All, Hope someone can assist with the following: Im looking for the heat resistant sheet rubber(?)/foam that goes over the fibreglass on the back of the engine bay firewall. The existing (may not be original) in my 246 has a black surface face that looks like black rubber/vinyl and has a quite thick foam insulated layer on the back this sits against the hard foam on the firewall. Can get several different types locally but not sure what it originally looked like. Can anyone point me to a supplier who has a product which looks the part, does the job etc. Any help appreciated. Paul.
Paul - I recently ordered and installed a black 1/2 inch material with adhesive backing. I have used it in the past. It is available from McMaster-Carr (www.mcmastercarr.com). It can be found by searching for 9349K22 on their website. It is available in various thicknesses, is a closed cell foam (does not retain water), and is relatively heat resistant and oil resistant. It looks nice, albeit a bit nicer than the factory stuff. The cost is approximately $45 U.S. for a 48 by 36 inch sheet. I have left over material, enough for you to use, but shipping to Aussie will cost as much as ordering a piece directly. Jim S.
Hi Jim, Thanks for the info. One questionthough ; how similar or dissimilar in appearance is this one when compared to the original - I'm restoring the car from ground up (going back together slowly now) and would like to get the appearance as close as possible, notwithstanding not much of the black face is visible when the engine is back in. PS thanks for you kind offer in any case. Paul.
Paul - I believe it is very close to the original. It is a bit "softer" in feel, and more "polished" in appearance. The surface is black, smooth, and uniform. I believe it is as close as you will get to the original. The risk is for you to order a sheet and return it, or to use it for another purpose. I assume that there is a McMaster-Carr distribution center in Austrailia such that the shipping cost will not be prohibitive, and at $49 U.S. for the adhesive backed version (less without the adhesive lining), it is not a big gamble.
