I got a replacement for my crumbling above-the-radiator foam from GT Parts that measures 3x5cm in cross section, and I find that what I just took off measures 5x5cm.

Is what I have a poor thing to use? It seems to me that if I glue it on to the trunk cover at the 3cm side it won't have enough strength to hold its shape and will bend inward from the air pressure, leaking air around the radiator.

Does Dennis McCann sell the proper 5x5 cm piece?

just finished doing mine yesterday. i used a combination of grey home style a/c foam and white closed cell packing style foam. it made a significant difference both on engine temp; down 5-10 deg. and cabin temp way down too. used a spray on foam adhesive to attach.

Bought the foam at Home Depot. It's a/c insulating foam. Attached with double sided cloth tape, works great.

Don't know if Dennis McCann has what you want, but home deopt does for about $3.00, plus tape.

Boy do I feel like a sucker!
$28 for a piece of foam that isn't even the right size!

Just got back from Home Depot, where I looked where they have the A/C ducting, in Building Supplies, asked by the Window section, and finally where they had the bathroom vanities and stuff. No one had ever heard of it.

What department did you find it in?
Does it come as a sheet or a piece that is square in cross section?
Happen to have the little tag with the SKU number on it still?

    Thank you very much,

Square piece, maybe 6 foot long, in a bag. It's designed to stuff in between a window airconditioner and the sill, or frame.

I'd shoot a picture of the bag, but I gave my back up away.

I found it, during the summer, near the checout at home depot.

    Pantdino,

Here's my opportunity to return a favor (from DM_N_STUFF). I ran into the same situation as you awhile back. I'm also in the LA area and couldn't find any of the foam at HOME DEPOT. So I posted here and Dave was kind enough to ship me out some foam. At the same time, I noticed the same foam at my local hardware store all of 5 minutes from me, of all places. If they still have it, I'll grab that for you and send it your way. PM me your address.

    Best,

    Manny

    Manny.

Post a picture of the packaging if you have it.

Make it easier for the rest of the gang to find, too.

    Dave,

I'll run by the store today. If they still have it, I'll scan the packaging. Great idea.

    Thanks again,

5 cm is just under 2", this stuff is 2 1/4" square. That's probably close enough, don't ya' think?

I called A/C parts/installation places in the phone book and several hardware stores. Finally found some at a True Value Hardware store and got two of them.
Plan to go back next week and get two more after they restock, as if Frost King decides to stop making the stuff or my TValue store stops stocking it I'll be up a creek in the future when this stuff turns colors from pollution and heat exposure. (Hey, when you've had the car for 20yrs like I have you learn to plan ahead.)

FYI, I called a place that specializes in foam and they said furniture foam rubber would turn to powder after time if exposed to 190 degree radiator heat.

    Thanks to all who responded!

Guess I need some education. I've had my car since fall '01, and I have no such foam on my radiator as is discussed here. The radiator has no sign or indication that it was ever there. Maybe the radiator was replaced by a former owner, and foam never replaced, or maybe L-series never had this foam. Could somebody please post a picture of how this stuff mounts, because if it really makes the car run cooler and the interior temp cooler, I want it!

The foam is glued or otherwise attached to the underside of the "trunk" cover, so that when the cover is closed it presses the foam down onto the top surface of the radiator.

Actually it seems to me that there should also be foam below the radiator so air can't pass under it. But I don't think mine ever had any there. Maybe because it would tend to get soaked in the rain, stay wet, and cause the lower sheet metal to rust out.

    Make that one.

I just noticed that the body shop did not replace the foam after they painted the car.

I could use one. Mine's completely gone. Let me know how much plus postage. (If nobody else has snagged it.)
    Thanks!
