Dash lens removal / 85 308

Do any of you out there know of a simple way to remove both the speedometer and tack lens for cleaning? Over the years, they have become clouded on the inside.

It's a little work, but can be done.

Remove the tach and speedo from the dash (to do that, you need to pull the instrument plate from the pod.)

There is a metal ring that holds the front of each instrument on. This ring can be gently pried/rotated off. The front of the instrument will come off and you can clean the glass. Re-assembly is a little more difficult--sort of like mounting a tire on a rim. Hard to describe, but pretty obvious once you look at it.

Yep,

Pull the instrument cluster and then you can get to each instrument individually. S L O W L Y & C A R E F U L L Y pry the silver retaining ring off of the face of each instrument (YES THEY WILL BREAK) and then the glass will come out. DO THIS IS A VERY CLEAN ENVIRONMENT as a speck of dust left on the actual faceplate during reassembly will drive you even nuttier.



And now "Ferrari Fix It..." Rule #2 comes into effect .........

........... fix the lights and bypass the dimmer switch.

 

Is it at all possible to do this with the removal of the instrument cluster. I did this a year ago to replace the bulbs. Unfortunantely I did not bypass the dimmer switch.

Yes of course. That is how you must do it.

Remove the metal faceplate holding the instruments just like you did to change out your lights the last time. No difference. Remove the instruments and THEN you can remove the glass for cleaning.

There is an old thread or three on here on doing all that. Look for "speedo" or "dash lights" or "speedo repair." They should pop up. The "speedo repair" thread is probably the best one for your question. Great tutorial by a fellow F-Chatter that shows it all and what tools to use and how NOT to break things.

Remember, the clock glass is not glass but plastic. It will likely have to be replaced to clear it up IF it is foggy (white or yellowish) which is due to old age and UV light.

As to the dimmer bypass operation, just pull the two wires going into the dimmer and "bridge" them together. You'll likely pick up a few "lost" volts and your dash might be a bit brighter. One of the simplest "fixes" of all on these cars (other than filling up a near empty gas tank).

PS I a side note, this car turns 24 on the 13th of this month and it still gives me a huge amount of pleasure!
