Well I just got a 97 355 spider last month and found out about new product called CDA by BMC (carbon dynamic airbox). Basically its a cone filter in a carbon box that eliminates the whole airfilter box and makes the air spin and goes straight into the air intake. The process makes sense because you use all existing parts and the air doesnt gets redirected in the old airbox from low to high and through the paper (or foam or whatever you use)

It took me about one hour to put on (thats knowing NOTHING) and had one small mod I had to do if anyone else gets this system. You will need to reduce the airbox from 3inch to 2inch going from engine side to CDA. So I went to local Home Depot and bought a rubber black sewer line reducer for 5 bucks (with clamps and looks like factory if you can belive it!!) each and made the reduction perfect.

The car sounds better, and I can notice good gains at all rpms and also gets rid of the paper filters and says to last about 40K until needs to be cleaned like any KN. Total cost $235 each and $5 for reducer so $240 a side plus shipping. The cheapest place I found them was called Fabspeed motorsport.

Hope this helps some of you since finding the reducer took more time than the whole install.

DUDE...I can't believe you....why'd you go and blow it??? We were gonna take that same sewer line reducer and print a little red horse on it and sell it for $125. ;)

How did it change the sound? How so have you noticed a change in the power???? I believe you...but how could the small amount of restriction in a stock filter actually inhibit that much power that you could notice it??? Are you sure the results are there???

I won't kid ya, I just got my '97 355 am was about to blow some good money on some BMC filters....this sounds interesting!! Would you be able to post some pics please??

    Thanks!

The sound just seems a little deeper without the paper filter. I have done this on all my P cars (964, 3.2 Targa, and 996) and feel and hear much better response. The biggest part of this system I think is having the car use the stock cold air intake hoses (cant do that on cone filters) then going into the engine without changing direction of the air (from the bottom of the airbox, through the filter then going out the top of the airbox) and speeding up and creating a tunnel like action in the process. I am no expert but seems like common sense to me.... I feel the results are there, and I know the car and can tell if one wheel is 5 PSI low or the smallest change in power. Even if its minimal in the end the costs are the same as changing the paper filters and I think it just plain looks better....

PS that other photo must not be US model, I did see he used some more homemade adapters than the sewer line reducers with no red horse on them, hehe...bad joke sorry...

Correct, it's a UK 95 model with 2.7 ECU, hence the dual intake pipes. These cars are a few bhp more powerful than the 5.1(?) model and were used for the Challenge cars.

What is a sewer line reducer????

The BMC carbon airbox's don't look the greatest, but they do get the job done.

You'll probably get the same power results from the BMC as you would from the Gruppe-M, for a fraction of the price!

u get what u pay for, for the looks. not performance.
i dont see how gruppm gives more power than bmc. all intake are basicly same, u run a cone filter instead of a box. add a heat shield, blah blah.

Could someone please show a pic inside the cda of the cone filter? Is it just a kn filter? Does it come with that oil like substance that gets on the wire?

I must be in the minority group here, as I think the BMC's look great installed in the photos, infact better looking than the GRUPPE M in my opinion. On top of that the BMC's should be lighter as well. DOES ANYONE HERE KNOW IF I COULD FIT THE BMC AIRBOXES TO MY 512TR?

    ENZOFORZA,

Check www.bmcairfilters.com and you will find airboxes for quite a few Ferraris but nothing specifically listed for the 512TR. This is what I intend to find out, but no luck so far.

I've put them on my '98 355 F1 and.......good and quicker response at med-high revs, but the engine irregular at low revs. Perhaps too much air in. So I've put them off and returned to stock system with rectangular BMC......Much better and smooth

First think you have to do is get this resonator box out of your engine, it serves no purpose. Now lets get gothspeed opinion on this set up.

+1 .... on that resonator ..... lol :p........ that box really needs to go ..... especially on that setup !!! It looks like those cylinder filters will work better but during some of my dyno tests I found the stock filters were not as restrictive as it seems ...... it was the factory 5.2 'tops' that were the biggest detriment to flow. Some 'new tops' will free up some HP. :)

    +2005 ........ :D
