I am planning on running in the Skip Barber Regional Race Series next year and I have recently bought some racing equipment over the internet. I bought a Arai helmet and it is alittle tight getting it on and taking it off, but it seems to fit just fine after it is on. How do I know if this is too tight?

Also, when I get on a plane how should I pack the helmet? Carry on? Or are there special bags that will protect the helmet in the checked baggage are?

    Sorry for the novice questions!!!!!!

Its too tight if you cannot sit in front of a video game for three quarters of an hour with it on and not be comfortable - tight on and off is not really relevant

I'm pretty sure helmets can be checked or hand carried according to how much you trust baggage handlers

You can even spend thousands of dollars on a special carbon fiber case

One moral as is so very often said here is do not buy helmets mail order

The helmet will break in after a little wear time. Generally when trying on a new helmet it should feel very snug and when you tilt it up and down it should not slip over your forehead. Depending on which model Arai you bought you'll have a specific head shape. Long-oval and round are two of the terms I believe. Also, the higher end Arais have the option of using different sized inserts to increase or decrease the inside volume/fit.

Arai makes a great helmet bag but go to any on the big online retailer and you'll find something perfect.

Carbon fiber for $1000! That just cracks me up. People will piss away their money on the most useless crap!

I carry mine on in a fitted nylon helmet bag lined with fake fleece. The only hassle is that on some small planes the overhead bins are too small, so you end up trying to stash it under the seat in front of you.

I have travelled with my gear across the States and to Europe and I managed to put my helmet, suit, boots and gloves all into the carry on for the overhead bin. Was never an issue.

My only concern was that it might get stolen in the hotel, but that never happened either.

So they let you carry it on. I figured in the post 9/11 era they would think you could use it as a weapon.

Hmm, not really saying that. I know it fits in the overhead bin, but I can't remember anymore whether I had the bag checked or not when I had the helmet inside. I have travelled a lot with it. My feeling is (knowing how concerned I am about cracking/loosing that helmet), that I had it with me post 9/11, but you better check with airport security first.

In the nineties I was flying high power rockets. Once travelled with one on the plane to NYC (no fuel, just the rocket). Unimaginable in today's world.

It can be useless, but it is much less weight. Lesser weight equates to lesser strain on neck muscles on the untrained neck. It does have advantages.
