OK, only had limited space for the title, but it sort of covers the point.

A little more information. I have a car I'm bringing in to Australia around November \ December (a Subaru 22B). I'll be selling it, and then the money for that should pay for a reasonable deposit on another car. I'm in London BTW.

So my question is this: Is there anyone out there that wants a specific car from the UK? I need to hang onto it for 12 months to get over the personal import rules, but I live here (I'm in south London, in a suburb called Carshalton), and I think I'll be buying the Fcar maybe around early 2009, therefore should arrive in Aus early 2010.

Yes, I realise this is a loooong lead time, but you can never plan too much. Thats my motto anyway.

If any of you are taking holidays over here and see a car you want while on your trip, let me know. Theres obviously a long way to go, but I just want to try and sort something out which might make it easier for all parties, including myself.

I can afford to buy up to the price range of a 360 using my own funds, or, if someone wanted a car that was a further up the food chain, send me a PM and we can discuss the details.

    Rgds,
    Rob

I think they need annual MOT inspections, but otherwise in an arrangement like this why not just send a car over right now for the new owner, and leave it up to the new owner to store it here until the ex-pom in question lands here with all required paperwork to register it etc?

Can't send the car to Oz until it has been owned by an O/S resident and used O/S for minimum of twelve months.

    Why?

Apart from the MOT inspection, what other proof is there that the car is being "used" over there? Do the boat captains really care that much about the cars they carry?

They look at your passport to see if you have been out of the country for a corresponding period of time to qualify.
Otherwise people would buy a car on an O/S holiday, store it there for 12 months and then bring it in. Used to be able to do that, but not these days. It's up to you to prove to Customs you used it and qualify for a concession, not for them to disprove it.

Plus that other govt department involved - Customs - they will know when it arrived in OZ. Compare purchase date to Import date: if < 12months :(

customs, absolute bastards, made me pay $750 to get car "decontaminated" due to MCD .... the car never moved from it's drop-off position but I did get a stamp to say they did do it

$750 for a carwash that NEVER happened, plus the $1,500 for the wharfies to get the car off the boat, plus $3,000 to have the car crated up (never happened) and shipped, all fluids drained (never happened) and the coup de grace, Lloyds saying I had under-insured for destination !!

People doing personal imports are mad

Its a "Personal Import" - so you can't just send 'em over. But you only need to be in Aus to pick it up and register it - no limitation on how short that time is ;)
    +1 !

mine was a one year old 7 series bought home at the height of the mad cow debacle, if your car had dirt on it they insisted on the car being steam cleaned.

Also came home when the LCT was 120% !!!

same thing happened to me when my turbo came back from NZ, the crew looking after the car never washed it properly as they said they would. i got charged at this end but the car never got washed, so i just took it off the bill i owed the boys in NZ. they weren't happy.

Work out the difference in landed cost versus buying the same car in Australia and subtract ~10%. Not strict science but the number is close enough!!:)

If you really want to know go to the DOTARS website.

Not what I was asking - talking about the premise of this thread and how there may be issues with storage over there, can rob_london_sydney purchase a car in the UK, send it to the new owner in Oz who then has 12 months to store the car and get it up to scratch before Rob comes over here with all the necessary paperwork to register it, and then "sell it" to the new owner?

If that's the case then not likely.

Mhh, I have a garage at another property I own, and the car can be stored there. If the car in question requires something more, thats not out of the question (eg humidifiers, etc). Bear in mind though, the cars need to be proven to be used. This is what customs \ dotars regs say.

The car I'm about to do, I bought with 44006 miles on in it October. By the time this October comes around, it will have about 45,500 on it. My argument for the low mileage, is that I have 2 cars, and I take a bus to work (which I actually do), so my two cars are weekend cars. I also had the car serviced in the middle of this, with a stamp in the service book, and I've got all the insurance paperwork, etc.

Its a bit of a pain in the ass to comply with the regs, but, the situation I'm in allows me to do this (dual passport holder and have a place in 2 countries). All it takes is time to wait the 12 months as per the regs.

Anyone interested in a car, I have until maybe January or February before I'll just pick one myself (probably a 360 spyder).

    Thx,
    Rob
