In order to access the exhaust system I need a refresher on where under the rear of the car I should place my floor jack and where I should place jack stands in order to safely work under the rear of the car. I have seen some old posts addressing this issue on the Testarossa, but I don’t think they will be applicable to the 512TR due to the difference in the way the engine is mounted. Thanks

This is a very good question. I own a lowly TR and I made a set of ramps that accomodate all for wheels - I drive forward, the front wheels go up and onto the horizontal portion - and at this moment the rear wheels hit their incline and go up onto their horizontal portion. In the distance of about 5 feet the entire car is elevated about 5 inches. Now I can roll my floorjack underneath the car at any point. I actually raise the rear by using a 4x4 wrapped in a wrag directly under the gearbox area - and then place jackstands adjacent the forward a-arm mounts on the lower frame rails. For the front end I roll the jack underneath the main cross-frame located just behind the front wheels axis - and place jackstand at the cradle where the a-arms are anchored. This whole process takes about 5 minutes or so.

For the 512TR I would really like to know if there are different methods of doing this. The 512TR is my dream car and I'm hoping to learn something here. So please you expereinced 512TR guys out there.....chime in here and lend us your wisdom.

    Hi carguy,
Would the use of a racing jack eliminate the need for the ramps? Some of these jacks go as low as 3", and I personally fear negotiating ramps in my TR.

Yes there are low profile floor jacks out there that may work. I have a decent aluminum jack that goes low enough and can do the rear of the car, but not the front because it isn't long enough. I made my ramps wide and with a gentle slope and pulling the car up onto them is a snap. Pretty they certainly aint....but they do work.

I installed Hyper Flow cats and a Tubi in January. The lower body valence under the rear of the car must be removed for access. Some of these screws are threaded and some are machine.

I actually did it without jacking up the car. Exhaust comes out the bottom, will not come out the top even though it looks like it might.

Later when I went to work on the pre-cats I decided to jack it up. Same for the oil change.

From memory I recall, I inserted my floor jack, standard size, just in front of the rear wheels. About 8-10 inches inside there is frame junction that I used. I did place a 1"x4" about 6 inches long between the jack and the frame.

I placed the jack stands on the frame a little forward of the rear axle.

If you want photos let me know and I will take and post.

There is a cross member that is directly behind the tranmission under the rear of the car. If you put a 10" long 4 x 4 on top of your hydraulic jack pad, it will fit perfectly under the cross member and you can jack the car up from a single point from the rear. You can then put jack stands under each of the jack pad locations forward of the rear wheels and lower the car onto the stands and get the jack out of the way so you can get under the rear of the car.

Thanks for all the help. I was able to accomplish my project without having to lift the car. I took off the bottom panel and had sufficient access. Thanks again.
