I have a friend who says he always touches the pump (it's grounded) before pumping. I have started doing it also. It can't hurt and every once in a while a spark causes some trouble at the pump.

    Sincerely,
A New Jersey resident who enjoys sitting in the car at the gas station :)

    Absolutely - especially pre-1984 Ferraris !

New to 1984 Ferrari's, the frame was ionized with an electrical charge while dipped in anti-rust solution. This reversed the effect of a kinetically energized spark in order to avoid igniting vapor fumes.

Modern cars can also be susceptible due to humidity levels. Touching a grounded pump first, then touching your car before and during gas pumping completes a ground and eliminates a charge buildup. Some cars such as Mazda, have treated felt in door handles. When opening the door, your fingers automatically rub the felt (without your knowledge) in order to discharge the buildup of kinetic energy (and you thought you were just opening the door).

A visual test of this, is to touch the metal lockplate with your key first. Observe (listen and/or see) the spark.

It is always worth mentioning, because not everyone knows about it, and not everyone lives in New Jersey where other people pump their gas for them :)

Some of us also live in Oregon, where it is unlawful to pump your own gas.

Just curious - Why is it a law that you can't pump your own gas?

Folks from New Jersey just aren't qualified to pump gas. The State has recognized this and has put this law in effect to protect the residents from themselves.

Very powerful gas station attendants union!

    j/k

What I find amazing is that despite full service on New Jersey Turnpike, the gas is often 10-15 cents cheaper than self-serve in other states along the I-95 corridor. Their gas taxes must be next to nothing.

Most gas station pumps have a warning label that explains what you should not do while pumping gas (cell phone use) and how to properly pump your gas. One thing the label suggests is to clap your hands before touching the pump and initiating fill-up. Clapping your hands expels any built up static electricity, thus reducing your risk of sparking the pump and/or the flammable gas coming
    out of it.

This little tidbit of information has come in very handy. In the winter, whenever I come in the house and remove a thick sweater, I can hear the static electricity crackling as I pull the fabric over my body. A quick clap of my hands gets rid of static electricity and I don't have to worry about the impending shock when I hang my sweater up on the metal hook. If I'm not wearing gloves, then I'll clap my hands before I touch the pump at the gas station (unless, of course, I'm in New Jersey, or Huntington, NY, where I'm forced to remain in my vehicle whilst someone else pumps my gas).

There are refineries in New Jersey, and no tax on gas, thus resulting in the cheaper prices.
