Damn! I was changing my oil this morning, and accidentally tightened, when I should have loosened. The end result is that the oil pan drain is stripped.

I believe that the oil pan has to come out for this to get fixed (or possibly replaced?). I've looked at some threads in the archive, and it looks like removal may be a bit complicated for me. So, I think I'm going to have to get the car to my mechanic.

Is there something I can use to temporarily plug up the pan so that I can fill with oil and drive it to the mechanic? Or am I going to have to get it towed?

    Thanks,
    Dom

You can buy a rubber bathroon stopper...they make small ones. Check your local hardware store.

According to the experts...have your mechanic use a Timesert instead of a Helicoil. The advantage is they are much less likely to come out when removing the drain plug in the future. http://www.timesert.com/

If you can get to the drain, you can get a Heli-Coil kit and replace the threads with the steel threads. If you use the kit be sure that no metal chips are left in the pan when you are through. You may be able to find a rubber plug that is used for temporary casting plug fixes that will fit the drain to get to the mechanic. The plug has a bolt that when tightened expands the rubber plug so it stays in place.

    Thanks for the quick replies.

If I use one of the time-serts, can it be done without taking out the oil pan? Or does the oil pan definately have to come out?

Edit: On review of the time-sert site, it looks like I'm going to have to take the pan out. Don't think I can get all of those metal bits out after drilling.

Boat supply stores have adjustable rubber stoppers with a lever that expands them & locks them into place. Just take your drain plug & find one that's close enough to get a good seal.
