Thats looks like my rack but I'm not 100% sure.I think there were two racks used in the 308 series,or at least I know that the GT4 used two different types of rack mounts and bushes.Early cars used the same mount and bush as the 246 while later cars used GTB type

    Jim,

Give the guys at Superperformance a ring -- they know their stuff, and are very very helpful. If they sell a rack that's right for your car they will steer you in the right direction (no pun intended).

    Cheers,

    S.

    Jim,

The rack depicted in the drawing below is a "Cam Gears" rack...An early 74 GT4, just like all Boxers prior to SN 18429 used the rack mounts shown on the left. These are the ones that have an "internal silent-block" type bushing held in place with a snap ring....mounted on what looks to be "surgical rubber". Either mount style can be used with the Cam Gears style rack. The mounting pads shown on the right can be retrofitted to any of the earlier cars, if a more robust mount is desired. This is all the lines of what we discussed last night.

    Regards,
    David

    David,

I'm going to pull my spare tire shrouding this morning and take some pictures to verify. The drawing looks like what I remember when I was under the car. :)

What's the problem with your rack. Most likley it's leaking oil from the pinion shaft seal and your right side bushing is shot. You can re-build it yourself cheap. Remove the rack. Take the pinion shaft seal to any motorcycle shop and they can match one up for you. As far as the right side bushing, I made one out of heavy duty 1" thick starboard. Also, if you are patient, you can replace the bushing without disassembling the whole rack....just search rack rebuild. The hard part is getting the old metal bushing cage out. Good luck. If you need a bushing, I have made them for folks @$15.00 PS the seal was from an 88 Kawasaki KX 80 shift seal $8.95.

FWIW, this is a Cam Gears rack. The 308's used 1 of 2 racks....Cam Gears or TRW. Also, there are 2 different types of mounts for these racks. The older mounts can be replaced with the newer ones, but I'm told it can get a little tricky. For anyone replacing a rack, be sure to look at the 2 pins that are within the mount (#20 in the diagram in David's post above). They can get some movement and get beat up.
Many thanks to David for teaching me about these racks. :)

    Data points for those interested...

Thanks! I bought a SuperPerformance Fast Rack off of FAds. I'll replace the old one along with my front suspension bushings, ball joints, etc... I plan on cleaning the old rack up and selling it with the rebuild kit that I purchased from John R.
    Wish me luck!

    JIM
