Drove the car in this morning and I noticed a ticking sound. Definitly engine related, but only above 3000 RPM...tick-tick-tick-tick-tick.....
When it idles theire is no noise. Car was warm but it was 50 this morning so it was only at about 170°. Oil pressure was fine.

Made the noise in gear and out of gear so I don't think it's the tranny. The WP was replaced in October 2003 so I'm thinking that's not it.

The air pumps were off the car but I'm not so sure the injection nozzles were replaced or plugged properly.

    Any ideas.

Do a search on aux belts, it could your a/c belt "popping". This has been discussed on here before. It has something to do with the belt material I believe. Good luck, I hope thats all it is.

I would consider that it might be either an accessory belt if it occurrs only when cold and then goes away, or arcing from the plug wires or plug extenders/ends.

Plug wires and extenders replaced just 2-months back. Problem just showed up after I messed with the AC mouting.

Car was warm when it happened, but it was for sure cold outside. I didn't notice it until I was almost at work and that was 20+ minutes of driving.

I'll check out the AC belt this weekend. I have the Sanden rotary compressor and I recently switched the pulley I use to get better belt alignmment (the Sanden has two pulleys on the clutch).

Try a little belt lube and see if the ticking goes away....I am betting it will.

For my 10 cents, I would look at spark plug extenders... normally when its the belts they quiet down because of higher RPM and exhaust noise.... but the tic tic noise gets louder as more RPM when its your SP wires....

If its the belts try to re tension them, that ususally fixes it, or it means you need new ACC belts... since you just replaced one, it very well may be a belt... they can get noisy when it gets cold out.

You need to localize the sound. Rev it and have a friend try and locate the area of the sound. A long tube with one end in your ear may help.

Since you suspect the AC system, start there.

    It's the AC.

It was making the noise again on the way home (got louder as the car warmed up). I turned on the AC and the noise all but went away.

Would agree with copterjon and davehanda it probably you belts. I have a friend with a 512bb that does the same thing. Sounds almost metallic but its not. Do what Dave says and lube your belts. Regards, Vern

My car did this when it is cold. The belt is sticking in the pulley on the release side and snapping loose. I looked for that one for YEARS. Fixed it with a shot or two of WD40. Got that trick from Ferrari of Houston's Challenge mechanics.

Doc Fung I believe it was, back on Flist, he claimed that the timing belts under specific atmospheric conditions could cause static discharge that was audible enough to be heard inside the car. I never heard of it anywhere else except on a Gates belts website. They not only are aware of it, they know all about it. Seems the types of belts less prone to do it, are not the type material we want on our cars.

Doc posted that but the ticking/snapping sound in my car came from a V-belt, not cam belt. I mean, I sprayed a tiny bit of WD40 directly onto the pully and the snapping stopped.

I second this suggestion. Even the smallest hole will cause the 'ol tick-tick.
