Very interesting indeed. This glass top on ebay for 308 GTS. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=7976785862&category=6763 The bidding price getting too high, I feel. Anyone know about the background of maker of this glass top, SARATOGA. Do they still make them? or anyone else make them? I have a glass top on my Esprit as well and never want to switch back to the solid top ever... love it.
haha. That's a nice touch though for a 3X8. I think a totally untinted clear glass piece would be nicer. Maybe too much sun for some of us, but it would create a very unusual look. With the windows up and an all-glass top, it would look awesome.
Down here in Texas, all you'd create is a greenhouse. The AC can barely keep up as it is, add all that additional glass and you'd have a Tifosi Roast in no time. There were about 100 of them made back in the day, and the molds were destroyed afterwards. The company was still around as of 2002/2003, but not interested in making any more. They're always pretty pricey when they show up on Ebay.
Why wouldn't someone make another mold and start making some more. Like it has been said they usually go on E-bay for a hefty price and always sell.
The greenhouse effect would stress out an already over taxed ac. What would be VERY cool would be if someone was to manufacture a foldable convertable insert/top that could be stored in the rear luggage compartment for those of us who need the seat all the way back. With the seat back there is no room for the fiberglass top behind it and who wants to drive with the top on. This way we could secure the car or keep out that sudden unexpected rain shower when we are away from home. Now that would be worth a couple of bucks!
Here in Bangkok, You won't last five minutes if you have the glass top on at noon. But at five with sun set....NICEEEE. Someone should make those. The price of the Lotus glass top is about $500. This GTS glass top is going above $2000 now. Someone will really make good profit if they make them again....
I have one of those Saratoga tops as well as the OEM targa. I use the glass top most of the time and totally LOVE it... Mine is in excellent condition and not sure if I would ever consider selling it.... Last Summer in the Northeast was pretty hot and I really did not notice it baking me any more than usual.
Hey, this is my first post. I'm 6'2" and bought a '78 308 this fall. I'm in Portland, OR, and it rains all the time, so even on sunny days I gotta have the top with me. If you flip it around, so that the black top is against the firewall, you can still put the seat all the way back. The top is curved, so place the top a little off center so the driver's seat nestles in that curve. The passenger still can't go all the way back, but then, they don't have pedals.
Saratoga first came into prominence when they made "glass" t-tops for the 1969 Stingray. I had the first production set as a promo. They were actually lexan, leaked when it rained. But really really a great effect from in the car.
Yeah i have one too. It's a nice thing to have. Some guy offer me 5 bills for it a few years back, but i kept it. For $2100 it makes you think. Is greed a good thing? Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
How difficult can it be to make one out of plexiglass ? so long as you have the hardware seals clips etc ? A mould from the oem roof should be easy and nice thick plexiglass and some heat ? It would scratch but perhaps lining the outside with the tinted or clear film will prevent this ? Skin
Don't overdo it, though, 'cause if it's too far over, it interferes with the shoulder harness path, so the harness doesn't sit right on the shoulder -- also important for tall people, if you don't want the windscreen frame to crease your forehead in a sudden stop. I've seen second-hand foldable tops for the 3x8 series advertized from time to time, but I don't know who made them.
$2175 sale price is low compared to the last few I have notice on eBay. Perhaps the price is coming down, but I distinctly remember several over the past few years in the $3-4K range. The best part about them is they offer more headroom than the stock roof (~1"). Troy
