I really need some advice on a problem I have never heard of or the dealership. I took delivery of a 2006 430 spider a month ago. She is a weekend driver, so I have taken it out only a few times. The car was bought from ferrari of west palm with a warranty for 1 year.

I was trying to put the top down and it froze mid way. So I turned the car off and on to "cycle" the lowering mechanism. Upon my second try I heard a loud "pop". the top would not go down and I just put it back up and sent the car to the dealership.

It turns out as the pictures show, a structural bar snapped. The problem is that this bar is made of magnesium and they are saying that there is no way the hydraulic system has enough power to do that. It will also cost 65k to replace the top. They are doing the honorable thing by getting Ferrari to cover it, but they are saying it may be a slim chance.

Has anyone heard of this happening. The car is very low mileage, one owner car and has never had problems. The only recall I found was a fire hazard recall and nothing pertaining to this.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. This could be my worst nightmare come true.

    Thanks

So, are you saying that the dealer is hedging on the warranty they gave on the car because they believe you forced the top down instead of letting the mechanism do it?

If you have a written warranty and they cannot prove you caused it by doing something improper yet refuse to cover it, go to your attorney and sue.

Goodness gracious... I haven't ever seen or heard anything like that. The service records of one car that I was looking at had the same issue with the top freezing midway and they couldn't replicate the issue at the dealership. I can't believe it is $65K to replace the entire top mechanism. I do know it's $10K to only change the fabric w/window.

If it's the Power Cube warranty (since it's a 2006), I don't think it covers the top. Only engine/transmission, etc.

If that's the case, then I'd find an independant shop to locate the missing part from a wreck and have it replaced that way. There can't be too much calls for these things so they must be lying around. If I'm correct, they are the same for the 360 and 430.

There's no way this can cost $65 grand to fix.

I dont know if the 1 year warranty covers this either. But I was hoping as a sign of good will, the dealership would take care of it, since I just got delivery of the car.

$65,000.00- that can't be right! And if you paid the extra money to buy through a dealer AND are under a warranty I would hope this would be covered....maybe they are trying to say it's not covered, but will then come back and say something like they will discount the work 50% for you to make you feel better about paying $32,500!

This is insane...so its concieveable that say 10 years from now a 430 spider with a broken top that's due for an annual service and tires but is otherwise mint condition would be totalled out since repairs would cost more than the car is worth!

:( 65k!! for that money it should be easy to find a company that can fabricate that part by CNC in aluminium for you easily. Make sure you keep the leftovers!
Even for a complete hood that would be outrageous.
I agree the dealership should find a solution.

65k? Wowzas! That cannot be right. Im not saying your wrong or anything but if it cost that, what does it cost Ferrari? Just say 65k/220k sticker price. They are claiming that some part in the top cost 30% of MSRP? If not covered you would have to take some other action. I hope everything works out in your favor.

Take the $65K and buy a F360 coupe and use the F430 only on top down days! Actually
I'm just kidding because the price is so ridiculous.

I would check with an independent mechanic or good upholstry shop on the price of the part.

Or better yet, check ricambi. They have parts list.

Reviewing your power cube coverage is also helpful

I was just about to write that! Im happy I'm not the only one with ridiculous thoughts in my head. Or you could buy a 360 spider and use the part for the 430(if they are the same) and then swap them depending on what car you wanted to drive!

No way part is $65k, get the part priced up and stop worrying.

A complete engine for a 430 is less than $60k from Ferrari fitted!!

Unless there is other major damage, why would they say you need to replace the entire top?

Something does not make any sense. I wish you the best of luck and a fair outcome to this undeserved situation........Steve

x2 on an independent shop pulling the broke part, sending it out to a fabricator with a cnc mill, scan it and spit out a copy in aluminium.... whats 1 extra pound vs 65k dollar.

Keep in mind the total cost you are being quoted is most likely for the entire capote top assembly.

you are right. 65k was to replace the entire top. But even 10k sucks, if you just bought the car that is certified from a dealership. the entire reason, I paid extra to a dealer was to have the comfort of having a ferrari certified car. a certified car should not have a major problem within the first month of ownership. i feel like im *****ing too much, but it just doesnt seem right.

Anyway, thanks for all the support. I will keep everyone posted on how things work out. And please if anyone has ever heard of this happening, please chime in.

I still f'n love the car. just switched from a porsche

Here is your solution - great guys on this forum. Even $6500 (sixty-five hundred) is a pure rip-off. I love these cars, but I think you have to be part "sucker" to deal with the parts prices. Yeh, I know, I shouldn't own one because I can't afford it, what a bunch of b.s.

JB Weld, spend $7 bucks and get this stuff! Give it a try it is unbelievable how well this product works. I know a guy who broke off part of a Porsche engine block (mounting point for the A/C compressor) It worked like a charm and has held up ever since. So no, he's not kidding!

    Wow! That IS impressive! :D:D

I know how good the stuff is, used it before! Didnt think it would hold an a/c compressor mounting point though.:eek:

Yea people knock JB weld but it was invented to weld together case Ford flat head V8 cylinder heads. They have a problem cracking and you can imagine how much pressure a cylinder head is under, plus cast iron is not the easiest stuff to weld....

You can also weld magnesium, but it takes someone with the know how search around in your area. If you get it welded back together the weld if done correctly should be stronger than the rest of the material.
