After buying my 348 a few months ago, I noticed a noise coming from the left wheel. It sounded like a wheel bearing. So I decided to jump into it, investigate and eventually repair. Here is the procedure. (in .doc format)
What year is your 348? I had one of mine replaced on my '94 spider and unfortunately in the late cars (from Assy No 8799 per my parts manual) the bearing is a unit that is F-car specific (and bloody expensive) rather than the generic SKF bearings in the earlier cars. However at least from the diagrams it looks like it is a lot easier to R&R the later cars' bearings. Cheers Kevin
Mines a 91. The bearings I got from Ferrari of S.F. They were SKF bearings originally. I went to Gerardi Bearing Co.(Salinas, CA. 15 minutes away) and ordered the SKF. Even though they could get the right ones, ($40 each) they sent me the wrong ones, so, me, always being in a hurry, drove to SF (6 hr trip) and got the factory ones from them.(in stock) $110.00 each + $35 for nut and $25 for seal. Still tons cheaper than having dealer do it. Was quoted: $1,600.00 for replacement!!
That is nuts, especially since (as you discovered) the early bearings are c. $40 each... Nice work and good explanation as well. Cheers Kevin
