Probably not a scam, and there is a good chance
that the existence of the car can be confirmed through the FCA register book - if you are are an FCA member you can buy it for $15.
They are probably sick of phone calls/already have a buyer, can you imagine how many wannabe's would call when you advertise a cheap Ferrari?. 98.5% of the callers would not even know what a GT4 looked like, they imagine they are getting the latest Ferrari that fits their mental picture of what a Ferrari should look like.

I will be at Auto italia, will bring 308GTB and possibly 412GT if I can get the new exhaust headers fitted

MIke I spoke with the guy and remembered that the car was previously advertised afew months ago.I asked him if it was the same car as I recognised the suburb and he told me it was and he got messed around by wannabe buyers. That ad was on Thursday and I rang the same day.He didnt know of the service history and said the car was his fathers and he didn't know where he got it serviced. We made an appointment to see the car on thursday and after alot of failed attempts we weren't able to see it.Then the following thursday I saw the car readvertised for $35K.And the guy was just 2 suburbs away from me!The thing is if you want to sell a car you have to put up with bull$hit.WhenI was selling my 74 alfa spyder I had a guy turn up with his 17 year old son who was going to start uni in Canberra and wanted to by the car for his son.He said "Do you think this car is a reliable car for my son to travel up and down from Canberra?"I told him it was a 30 year old car what did he expect!Anyway it wasn't meant to be.Any way Mike I'll look for you tomorrow

When/if you get to see the car, let us all know the chassis number. Chances are someone here knows the history of it. Of course, if it's 15422, I can help out a bit :)

hi i flew to sydney to see the car on saturday. sadly i find i'm not quite in a position to buy the car at the moment, but here's the details...

yes, they are hard to get a hold of, and the old italian geezer seems a bit gruff at first, but he's a fantastic bloke, and loves driving like he's on the lam, barrelling through sydney streets. we just drove around for about an hour, he seemed like he could go on all day. i drove it for 10-15 minutes.

it was imported from italy by a friend of his, whom he purchased it off of about 15 years ago. he had no idea of any ferrari registry, so it appears to effectively be a secret ferrari. :)

cosmetically the car is a 7/10, paint looks good enough for me, interior is in good condition, the console shows it's age but the upholstery is great. front left indicator is broken, ferrari badge is slightly bent, otherwise it's beautiful, but certainly not concourse.

the clutch, carbs, belts have been done within the last year, along with a new exhuast, and the tyres are two years old. the rear shocks need replacing, on hard bumps the rubber grinds and you bottom out. oh, and the passenger window doesn't move, so attention needed on the electric windey thing.

we didn't get a chance to really push it, but managed to squeeze out a few nice moments through sydney streets, and the engine performed flawlessly. it sounds fantastic, is verrrry responsive, and when you open it up it has a wonderful growl emanating from the webers behind your head.

the clutch needs adjusting, it is REALLY REALLY heavy. slotting into gears quickly is occasionally a challenge, but i put that down to my inexperience rather than a fault of the car. as to the position of the shifter, i found it quite strange, it's well forward and to the right, so much so that the stick and knob are effectively obscured by your left knee. is this usual?

otherwise, what can i say? it's a brilliant car that goes and sounds as good as it looks. i wish i could have taken it, but it came up too quick and looks like i need a few months to properly prepare. :( in the mean time i'll keep looking around, hope this one goes to someone who'll treat it right.

    here's the other details:
    1979 Ferrari 308 GT4
    red outside, black inside
    68k miles
    vin#: 14254 DGM 14864 0M
    engine#: 0200 3251

i didn't take many pics, but fullsize versions can be viewed here.

Ash, many moons ago (over 20 years actually!) I drove one of these beauties from Naracoorte to Adelaide via the Coorong road and via Victor Harbour. I can still remember the sensation of approaching traffic at such speed that I wasn't sure at first if they were going my way or coming at me! I recall a brilliant high speed ride and an engine note that sounded better the faster we went.

I quickly discovered the redundancy of the sound system - it was windows down all the way (my choice, not an electrical fault), the better to enjoy the music of that little V8. However, one of the lights would bob up and down from time to time which was a little disconcerting as I attempted a personal best on Willunga Hill at night.

    Ah, memories......... :)

Back to practical matters, it is a good move to look at several before taking the plunge, so you shouldn't feel too bad about passing on this one, or the next.

wise words, even if you pass up a good one it will make you realise what you are really getting into on the bad ones.

Another piece of advise , don't think you can fix those small problems for fiat money, there is no such thing as a cheap Ferrari!

I spent circa $3-5k/yr for the first 4 years getting "insignificant" things like the exhaust replaced, clutch changed, suspension bushes replaced, water temp overheating fixed blah blah blah, whereas I could have spent the extra time and money on a much better example (mine was average)

The original exhaust for these things listed in the Ferrari price list from the dealer is $7,300 plus fitting ($500), I'm sure you can get them cheaper from Ned Kelly but it is something to be aware of.

A PPI is worth it's weight in stocks and bonds if the right person does it, mine wasn't

yes, i guess i'll eventually thank my bank balance for providing me with the common sense that my brain otherwise wouldn't have.
Fiat Money: A commodity which is intrinsically worthless and generally acceptable to serve the functions of money.

i think there's a little something in that for all of us. :D

i did the sums, and i've spent enough on my fiat in the last year and a half to have bought that ferrari. so in the end i was just one of those wannabe buyers messing him around as mentioned by maurice. oh well, hopefully soon it'll be on the road and i'll get a chance to see whether it can hold it's own through the twisties as a menacing dot in mhh's rear view mirror.

it'll be great to have a V8 in the back and a Cavallino on the front, but i think the X1/9 is much better looking.

it's black leather throughout, minimal wear (considering it's a 1/4 of a century old), and smells GREAT!

at the time they mentioned that on sunday there were 2 other people going to check out the car, "so no matter what it's a gonna sell a this weekend a". when i called back to say i wasn't buying it, i asked about other interested parties and she said "there's 1 other guy who's 99% going to buy it, but we'll see how that turns out.". hey, it might be sitting there for me to check out again in a while.

yeah, happy to see any pics. if i had've spent a little more time organizing, i might have noticed that autoitalia was on and i would have stayed for the weekend. as it was, i had a hard time killing the 3 spare hours i had in sydney. the sat-nav in the rental commonwhoore was amusing, when i got lonely i'd dial in random destinations and the gps lady would freak out at me telling me to take every second side-street to go where she wanted. :D
