so how would you compare this to a Lusso then Phil ?

I have heard varying impressions from "truck-like" to "beautifully balanced" for the Lusso .

The steering in the older cars being mostly worm and roller usually means a lot of sloppiness at the straight ahead position which to me is disconcerting and offputting when thinking of getting an older car.

Well, it looks like the possibility that something vaguely educational may appear from this thread instead of the usual drivel :)

Here is a question for the Australians, a nice 1982 Latour awaits the first correct answers:

    1. What is the chassis number?

    2. Where was the photo taken?

    3. What was the year was the pic taken?

    4. This particularly car is both famous for an historical reason and infamous in Australian Ferrari history, why?

    5. The car was owned for many years by a well known car Victorian collector, name two other marques was he was into?

    Regards,

    Carl.

Can't answer any of the questions and John Millard is too busy tidying up Rally stuff to log on I bet!
It is the same colour as the genuine Spider I saw at Concorso Italiano - 1st imported to the States and done 1400 miles from new...a real timewarp machine...

Surely there are so many factors in the way a car "feels" to drive (in steering terms). Ie all the factors that Cyril would work on Toe/Camber/bushes etc. as well as whether Worm and roller V worm and peg or V Rack & pinion.

    Cyril should comment on this.

Take Ray's 330, and Jim's 330 only difference is S1 vS2 , but they feel different as both a passenger and to drive. Surely that could be heavily "modified" by Cyril's handywork?

The WORST car I drove was a 246. When I pulled up behind a truck at 90kph , dropped a gear and pedal to the metal acceleration ... the car literally "jumped" right, when took foot off accelerator .. the car "jumped" left. This was driving to QLD for the FNR in 1992. Diagnosis Cyril ??
I have not been brave enough to drive it since. Allegedly this has been dialled out with ALL the bushes replaced.

that sounds like engine mount problems ??

or the torque bar that connects the engine to the frame ??

yeah, true Phil, a good alignment by Carl is worth all the time and trouble of getting it to Melb but even he says it seems hard to get certain cars like Daytonas to align properly and others like Boxers seem easier to get right.

I unfortunately have never been in either Jimmy's or Ray's 330s (they have offered) so I will now try and get a sample of each car next time I see them to see what you mean.

    Cheers

    JM

In response to Filly, most Ferrari owners are such miserable turds they refuse to maintain their cars properly as they get older! In the case of Ray and Jim's 330's I've not driven either but let's use the 330 as an example. These cars are now over 40 years old and have invariable had a succession of unsympathetic owners, especially during the 1970's and early 80's when they were a curiosity more than anything else.

A 330 GT 2+2 has a live rear axle, so imagine the spring leaves are rusty, the axle location bushes are shot and at the front the king pins are worn, tie rod ends loose and the steering box slack. Added to that, it has some XWX's on it made before the ark and you can image what it's like to drive.

When I began playing around with these things I was shocked at the poor state of most of the Ferrari's that come in for tyre and alignment work. Even more amazingly, is the attitude of most of the owners. I can name maybe 5 people ever who have simply asked for the car to drive right as opposed to "I have X sum to spend and stop when you get to that figure."

We've been through this before many times, buy an old V12 and budget something like $20,000 to get the thing running and driving half reasonably if it's been a garage queen or just neglected.

How is the 330 search going in any case Filly?

Moretti asked about the Dino, if it's not a slack wheel bearing, and it probably isn't, then it just has a collapsed suspension bush, like most of them!

And the answers to the quiz?

Well, Filly was very close and the answers are:

    1. #14111

    2. Lowe's in Balwyn

    3. 1973

4.a Last RHD plexiglass front Daytona.

4b. This car was the subject of an amusing attempted theft. The would be thieves broke into Lowe's and attempted to steal the car by driving it through the front window. The only problem was, they filled the car from a drum they found in the workshop which they thought was petrol, it was actually oil! The car ran long enough to drive partway out the window where it stopped, perched on the ledge above the footpath.

    5. I was going to say Rolls Royce and Bugatti but that will do Filly, well done.

    Regards,

    Carl.

Come on Jonesy, you know better than that..

if a car pulls one way on power, and the other on decelleration, the most likely thing will be a rear tyre wear, uneven size and/or pressure problem.

just this week you did that Gay tomato pants tearer with EXACTLY this symptom, AND it had a completely shot steering rack... yet the new tyres made it drive straight again, even though the rack isn't fixed yet.

I've driven dozens of 308/Dino/BB with this problem, it'll be tyres 95%, and it's usually where someone has fitted ONE new tyre on the rear, and there's a rolling circumferance difference between sides, or theres a flat.

No, real colour amazingly. Though I belive it was painted later on, surprisingly. The reason I asked for it's chassis number is because I don't know, it's one Dino that's been bugging me for years. The kid in the pic is David Day's brother.
