    Hey,

Over on bimmerforums.com (bf.c) we have had two highly successful drives so far in the Fall before the cars had to be put away for the winter. The drives included driving through the crazy mountainous and country roads of Vermont and Massachusetts at grandmother like speeds and sticking together in a line of 12+ BMWs. We use two-ways and radar and the trips lasted roughly half a day each, with us setting out of Troy at around 12:00 Noon on a Saturday.

Well there are going to be many more drives and we are planning on a long one with a camp up in the Adirondacks. Get some real time to take some nice pictures, rest and get to know each other more. It will of course be family friendly as some of the owners have kids that would love to come.

So my question is who would be interested in doing a drive like this when the weather gets good (Spring/Summer) with a bunch of BMWs?

These roads... they are our playground. I leave you this this:

Not sure I'd put that down in writing. Reminds me of that story about the "Real" running of the bulls in NV. They had a spotter plane/helicopter. They were asked to not do it again or they'd be arrested.

    haha, you would think so.

I fixed the story... ;) The first time I went, I was so scared I almost had to by new seats as well as carpet for my car. I would really like to extend this to more extreme cars and not just BMWs.

why would you plan on putting the most extreme cars on a run with old 328s at the limit? isn't that a tad bit dangerous?

    1. I think you would be suprised how much we can get out of our 3-series.
    2. We have other cars in it as well, like an Alpina B6 2.8, M3s and other sexy cars.
    3. The point isn't to go the fastest you can around the roads...its to enjoy driving your car on the twisty roads at a speed you know it can handle and enjoying company of the other owners who know why we are so passionate.

Sorry if that sound aggrevated or angry. I know that Ferraris and cars of the like on this board are miles ahead of what we have. I just had the idea that having some of the greatest German and Italian cars together on the country roads of Vermont for an orgy of horsepower and torque and burnt rubber would be a good idea... The biggest point of having radios is safety (since you seem concerned). The leader will tell when its safe to pass, when it isn't and other things like radar hits and whatnot. Once we get going it is serious business in the twisties and at high speeds, we do not enjoy people who dive in and out and act like fools as it is terribly unsafe and draws unwanted attention.

Anyways... thanks for the yes. :p

not trying to trash on bmw's or anything but on my share of runs i'ev seen people get a little to gidy with their cars. Including the spin out of an awd talon into a ferrari, and a corvette coupe going ff roading over a cliff and bending the frame on the car. Although both drivers walked away unscrathed thats not the point. When you take a bunch of equally equipt cars its pretty safe to say that you'll be able to do what the guy in front of you does, but taking a 1993 328i (again not singling out BMW's) trying to follow an f-40 or challange stardale through a turn, bad things could result. I am not worried about the handling of a new m3 or z8 but i dont see any of those in the picture. Again nothing against bmw's the 308 isn't the race car it used to be either, but you also dont see many 17-19 year old drivers piloting them. Good luck with the run, I am sure someone on here might head out, post pictures afterwards.

Sweet ride. I hear Ferretti's comments though, because no matter how sweet this bimmer is (and its pretty sweet), you probably couldn't turn, brake or accelerate the way a new Fcar can.

We've seen some pretty close calls on some of the runs and if the cars weren't great performers, there mighta been trouble.

He said drive, not track day.

I have a super easy way to deal with aggressive M3 drivers (owning 1 helped me realize this):

If driving the Ferrari, hit the Laser Shot and drive 55mph

If driving the Lamborghini, hit the Laser Shot and punch it. :)

I'd be in but I'm in CA.

When it comes down to it, my cars have very little (if any) game against a new M3 or any M5, but if we're talking older 3 or 5 series there is a big difference.

There were 2 close calls on the poker run that i saw....first the M3 and the Maserati 90th aniversary spider almost ran right into each other in the center lane and then last the Mustang swerved around a car at 120 mph and started to slide, almost lost it, then barely gained control. If its just a cruise with no dangerous high speed stuff Im sure some Fcar owners would love to join you guys. Try posting this in the New England Region since there are a lot of members there probably closer to where you have this cruise.

Let me start by saying this - I took my 545 on the bimmerforums run through NJ back roads 2 weeks ago. Had a good time and met some cool ppl. This run sounds like its pretty far for me, otherwise I'd probably be down.

However, I do agree that the variance of performance between the different cars might be too wide. I'm sure everyone will drive responsibly, but on mountain roads, there'll be times when a faster car gets stuck behind a slower car due to single lane roads, oncoming traffic, etc. It happened on the run 2 weeks ago and that was almost all bimmers. Throwing a few Fcars or exotics into the mix may get a bit too chaotic.

Good point. Last time I had a 323ti on my tail (he is faster than an M3) and that is why the radios are used. I simply slow down a bit (not slam) and signal him to go past me. It works well. Everyone goes there own pace and if you have a problem with the guy behind you getting too close there is plenty that can happen. As always on these runs safety comes first, then the fun.

It is up to the owners if they want to come though. I would love to see some Ferraris show up and run with us.

My car is the least capable one in this group, yet I cannot recall a single close call Ive had with you guys. Not that Im ever at the upper limits, but on the back twisties, have I ever made you guys nervous? Be honest... have I?

I remember a few close calls but nothing major ever happened. Also since we pretty much know everyone on the runs we show each other a bit more curtosey on the roads and look out for one another.

If the runs are around NYC then I wouldn't have a problem on a free day.Ofcourse I would like to bring my M5 if that was alright.

P.S. Why would you store a bimmer? Even on the M5board people always talked about storing their car for the winter? Does anybody just drive it during winter?

i hvae a 900 hp vette i drive in the winter, i also plowed through 2-3 inches of snow in the lambo before. I would never put a car away for months if the roads are clear. There is always soap and water all year round

it wouldn't be pretty if a bmw hit a ferrari. I've been to some bmw drives and sometimes they get a little crazy.
