Ross Brawn leaves Ferrari 26 October 2006 Today Ferrari has confirmed that Ross Brawn will leave the team at the end of this year. Paolo Martinelli, who was active at the engine department, will also leave the team. At Ferrari there are some changes for next year. Stefano Domenicali will become Ferrari's Sporting Directory, while Mario Almondo will take over from Ross Brawn to become the team's Technical Director. In a statement Ferrari said: "Ferrari offers its most heartfelt thanks to Ross Brawn and Paolo Martinelli for their immense contribution in the drafting of an extraordinary chapter in the history of the Scuderia and motor sport, which has produced a tally of eleven world titles (six Constructors' and five Drivers,' all of these with Michael Schumacher) and of around ninety wins in Formula 1 Grands Prix." "After years of hard and demanding work, Ross Brawn has decided to turn his attention to his personal life, while Paolo Martinelli will take on an important role within the FIAT Group: to them go best wishes for a satisfying future."
Just read it, a sad day. They will both be much missed. I hope Ross is gone for a year, but it doesn't look that way. This is a serious dismantling of the Management, starting with Todt, Brawn, and Martinelli.
With MS retiring it's probably for the best. That team was probably very set in their ways. I don't know for a fact, just assuming. Are the guys replacing them talented? I don't know the names. Do they have history?
I don't know how large Brawn's contribution was on the technical side but as a race strategist, he was probably the best on the grid. The loss of him in this capacity will be particularly acute. I have this feeling that the loss of Martinelli may be the biggest impact on the team.
Martinelli, if I recall corectly was only acting as an advisor/consultant to his replacement. These plans were well on their way aiding Schumacher in his decision to retire. I suspect that Brawn was already leaving much of the Techinacal work to his successor as well. We already know Byrne passed much of the duties of aero to Aldo Costa so i wouldn't be so worried about the team. The test team remains largely in tack and Todt will never allow the team to fall apart even if he is busy as Ferrari CEO. Race wins = better marketing = more sales and more mystique around the Ferrari name. Even if Brawn stayed, the more important question is would a Raikkonen be able to take advantage of Brawn's tactics. Schumacher was a once in a generation driver who could drive qualifying laps for 60+laps straight so when Brawn gets on the radio and says, "Michael we are converting you to a 3 stop strategy at Budapest where no one passes so put in 40 or so fastest laps together for the win" my sense is only Michael can do that. So with or without Brawn if Raikkonen has the goods, he has the goods. If not, Brawn or no Brawn we would suffer.
My concern would be how all of this affects Felipe. Massa is (IMHO) the future of the Ferrari title chase, not KR. Not that Kimi doesn't have the talent, he just doesn't seem to have the same passion as Felipe. Will FM's race team remain intact? Will Ferrari deem FM or KR the No. 1 driver? Massa has a clear advantage, having raced with, and in front of MS. His wins this season show he is a true contender. How many races did KR win this season??????
What is the Finnish word for "D'OH !!" .??.......I'll bet Kimi is repeating this right about now... hps
Not a snowball's chance in hell. Massa is a midpack runner at best. Kimi is one of the top 2 drivers in F1. How much are they paying Kimi and how much are they paying Massa? There's your answer.
I wish both of them well, everyone had a great chemistry and its not an easy task to get that back. Those guys had a passion to win. The bigger question is if the team goes on a losing streak for 4 or 5 years in a row, will you be able to go into a Ferrari dealership and get a car a little easier. Sorta like the mid 90's when you had 348's sitting on the dealership floor.
Once the rest of the shoes drop, Ferrari will be so decimated that it will be lucky to win a single race next year...so sad...
I doubt it. I think the 348s sat on the floor because they sucked, not because the F1 team was performing below expectations.
http://www.itv-f1.com/News_Article.aspx?PO_ID=37882 the whole team is changing..... It can't be for the better either ...WTF
Ouch!! The dream team breaks up. Is Rory still on board? Although with the engine development freeze in place what was Martinelli going to do anyway, dust off cam covers?
Yes Rory is still on board. Ferrari will be fine; consider a few things. 1) Engine develoment being frozen - a perfect time Martinelli to move to better things. 2) Bridgestone - Michelin has been kicking their ass for years now; with Ferrari's knowledge of Bridgestone they will light years ahead of Renault, McLaren etc. 3) Massa - Massa has his own race engineer, Brawn's departutre will not have a significant impact. 4) Ferrari's systems - This is the key - the key people that are leaving or have left Ferrari have put in place phenomenal systems and procedures to ensure success. Consider the reliability factor - they have multiple systems and anyalsis procedures which are incredibly thorough and detailed, which play a major role in ferrari's success. With F1 going to a more level playing field, more emphasis will be placed on a quality car with great driving talent. You won't see the dominance of the 2000-2004 years like in the past, but Ferrari will be very successful in 2007 and beyond........... Kevin S Orchard Park, NY
I think Ferrari will be best next year because they can keep BS tires. I'm guessing those teams with BS tires in 2006 will be first runners. I think honda and toyota will be just as strong as renault in 2007. I think Kimi has good chance for WDC next year.
I think Ferrari will be alright next year. They've hired from within and probably have been grooming these guys for these positions. Michael Schumacher, Ross Brawn, and Paolo Martinelli will be missed but I'm sure we'll witness some good results. It could've been worse, they could've lost these guys to rival teams.
Sorry, couldn't let it slide. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/intact I agree with what you are saying though. Michael was special. As I mentioned in another post, he had the ability to pump out fastest laps consistently on command. Image Unavailable, Please Login
