Been researching this a bit and I *think* there is 40 or less Euro/US 1976 steel cars ever made with the very first number being 19881 which was a Euro spec car and 19999 which was a US spec car. Mine, 20623, is the 4th to last 1976 car with 20631 being the last steel for '76 which was a GB delivered car. Anyone have numbers alternate to this?

There's a few threads here suggesting 19367 is the first 76 steel

Also the production rate based on chassis numbers would suggest more than 40 even in your range were GTB but I have no evidence either way

My GTB #20783 is steel and shows a January 1977 build date on the door jamb. That said I have never found a date stamp on the car from 1977 they are all 1976.

That would reconcile with the OP......

What does your Compliance Plate in the engine compartment read?

    Should say:

Meets all applicable standards for year "197x".....20405 show '1976', while my two 1977 production cars show "1977"

    Gentlemen,

Don't know if this helps, but for what it worth...

    Dirk-Michael Konradt, in his book "Autos, die Geschichte machten, Ferrari 308 und 328", Motorbuch Verlag, 1990 gives the following production numbers;
I have no way to accurately cross-check the figures so I can't vouch for their accuracy, and please bear in mind that these are production numbers, so calendar years, from January 1st to December 31st (well, more or less...after all, a pinch of salt is always prudent with every Ferrari numbers from that era)

    308 GTB:
    1975: 26
    1976: 644
1977: 963 (of which 138 were the last "Vetroresinas" (= Glass cars)

    308 GTS:
    1977: 106

    Best,

wow, we're all here aren't we... we need a photo shoot

so, 644 in 1976 with I am sure most of those being glass. The US cars at the end there were all steel and I believe Ferrari made US cars in batches of 20. I believe there are no 76 Euro steel GTBs?? I can't imagine more than 40-60 steel cars that year though....

    John,

After writing my post I went trying to do some more or less "educated guess"; I'll try to explain my reasoning.

In the aforementionned book, the author concludes that "there were 818 glass cars", which we know is not the number on which most people agree: the most frequently given figure is something like 717, I don't recall the exact figure, but I am sure somebody on the forum will remember it.

Evidently to arrive at "818 glass cars" he simply considered that the switch between glass cars and steel one happened once and for all at one point, i.e, he assumed that before the switch on a specific chassis number, the production was entirely glass cars, and after the switch, entirely steel one; we know that is wrong of course (with anything Ferrari, nothing is ever that simple...) and that during the second half of 1976 and the first half of 1977, glass and steel cars were manufactured t the same time.

Proof of this is that if you add 26 for 1975, 644 for 1976, and the 138 glass cars he gives for 1977, that gives 818, the total he gives for all glass cars.

But assuming that his production figures are right (the book is, overall, fairly reliable on figures) and that 138 glass cars were indeed manufactured in 1977...well, if the ACTUAL numbers of glass cars produced is indeed 717, that leaves us with 101 (818 - 717) steel cars produced in 1976.

Hope I am clear on this.

This is a bit more of what you arrives at.

For the time being, it is the best I can do...and a more or less educated guess (flame suit on, guys...) And if somebody knows better, I would be glad to know.

    Best

As for the first steel euro GTB...

    This site

    www.r-design.net/308/index_e.html

gives at least two cars as euro steel cars produced in 1976:

19367, a steel Right Hand Drive, but it is very "isolated" in a long production run of glass cars
19881, a steel euro exported later to the US.

These two are the only steel euro 1976 among the known chassis number on the aforementionned site; most of the early steel cars were US cars.
By 1976, I consider, as we do in Europe, a car produced in the calendar year 1976 (Jan. 1st - Dec 31st)

And he gives 712 as the actuel number of Vetroresinas produced.

Hope this is of some interest.

    Yes, indeed....

It looks like I will be entrusting #20405 to a long time friend who has long wanted one...I repeatedly tell him the 1976 steel is a rare and special thing..

"You want Boxer Trim, with that???" :D :D :D

I wish the original sales info could be found on that car....

He lost his thumb (partial) in a bike wreck recently, it turns out a thumb and early 308GTB values are pretty close!! He got the girl he was 'trying to impress', thankfully she was thrown without injury into the shrubbery, so could help him at the Hospital.

Very lucky as neither had on helmets....

That's rather typical of Ferrari, the prototype 512BB from 1976 stands alone, among 365 Boxer production cars.

New guy here (I introduced myself on another thread...) - Does the Ferrari market generally parse values based on rarity within a given year (i.e. a model changeover)? I thought the market simply recognized 308 values more broadly based on: Glass (us;euro); Steel/Carb (us;euro); 2v Injected (us;euro); QV (us;euro); QV Galvanized (us;euro) with the years of manufacture simply designating when these production changes were introduced. So is a steel '76 car more interesting than a '77 car? Of course a prototype from any year is something interesting and special!

You have it correct, IMO, Glen, the specification of the engine/body is all the determines the value (along with condition, condition, condition).....

The only problem is the restless evolution of the models, even on the street cars.

The change from 'glass to steel didn't happen "as of VIN # XXXXX", they made both for awhile...so a 1976 by definition is one of the first ones.

The same thing is true of the changover to catalytic convertors (and softer cam profiles).
North American cars made this change in 1978, although Euro versions were carbed/NON CAT until 1980.

With the early examples you have to pay attention.

All things being equal...this particular car does lack a complete ownership history, missing the jack tool roll, been color changed...a few quibbles.

    Still a solid car.

The thing to do would be to shoot it back blue, but I have another blue one!
I told him I'd shoot it whatever color he wants, as I make repairs and strip the race sponsorship. The red on it is cracked and bad anyway...

I'm going to redo it and my Pininfarina Spyder the same color, at the same time...Rosso Rubino (Ruby red metallic)
