Seems Red Bull plans to switch to Renault engines next season but it could be squashed by resistance from Ferrari over changing terms of their customer engine deal. The current engine contract is until the end of 2007. it seems that Red Bull wants to move the deal to Toro Rosso. Jean Todt made it clear today that he was not supportive of any plans to shift the contract to Toro Rosso. It's possible that Red Bull Racing may try and work their way out of the Ferrari deal for 2007 by claiming the contract is with their parent company Red Bull rather than the team. That would in theory allow them to shift the supply to Toro Rosso without breaking the contract.

The more likely scenario possibility is Red Bull Racing taking Felipe Massa next season in exchange for Ferrari allowing the deal to be swapped. Massa could find himself without a drive in 2007 if Kimi Raikkonen and Michael Schumacher end up alongside each other at Ferrari. Massa is managed by Todt's son Nicolas, and he has had his career overseen by Jean Todt for several years.

Very interesting to say the least.

Or they could keep the Ferraris in the RBR team and put Renaults in the STR, but change drivers and chassis. On paper, DC would be driving for STR and Scott Speed for RBR, but would it really make a difference? I doubt the contract for engines has drivers tied in so it could be done.

That would make Scott Speed a Ferrari driver! Whoa! Here comes my support!

I'd much rather see Massa go to RBR though.

Will they really gain by switching though? The Renault doesn't seem to have much speed (if any) on the Ferrari coming out of turns. Down the straight it seems that the aero is where the Renault outshines its Italian counterpart.

At least when you enter into a contract with Ferrari you know they'll be there next year. Hard to say how long Renault will be financed by Ghosn should they stop winning so often.

Sort of awkward to be courting a French company after that press release, no?

They could fix all of this by mandating Cosworth DFV's, Ferrari flat-12's, and Matra flat-12's (?)
