    Hi guys,

My name is Richard Elliott and I am a 3rd Year Psychology Undergraduate at the University of Manchester in England, UK. Part of the course’s 3rd Year assessment is a year-long research project. I have decided to explore the field of computer-mediated communication. To be specific, I will be looking at the dynamics of online communication in message boards in forums. I will be doing this by, firstly, inviting you all to complete an online questionnaire. This will take approximately 5-10 minutes to complete. After a couple of weeks, I will remove the questionnaire and randomly select 10 members to analyse their posts for message style. Your posts will only be selected if you agree to do so at the end of the questionnaire.

Your response to this questionnaire will be greatly appreciated. If you have any questions, feel free to ask them in this thread or send me an e-mail/PM.

    Thanks for your cooperation,

    Richard Elliott

Oh and for those of you who use Firefox- the window will resize itself when you click to begin the study. We couldn't find a way around this I'm afraid so apologies for that.

Lol, I did realise this when I looked through the other day but was hoping you wouldn't notice! I'm gonna keep it like that though as people have already replied and it won't really affect anything. Thanks for doing it though!

FYI I didn't see anywhere to put my username or for you to get back in touch with actual users taking the questionnaire. Maybe you will just go off who responds to this thread.

I took it last night, and on the last screen, there was an input box for your username... I filled it in; maybe you were able to submit without having to fill it in?

That's right, there is a box on the following page that asks you if you'd consent to having your posts analysed. You put your username in that box. And you're also right in saying that you are able to submit without filling this box in.

Did you think it wasn't clear enough? If so, I'll make it more obvious. And if there are any of you who hadn't noticed this but would still consent to having your posts analysed, please drop me an e-mail/PM.

but Richard - can I ask a favour? If, by chance, you review my posts and find that I'm about to turn into a looney who thinks my family needs to be cut down with a chainsaw. Can I ask you to warn them first? Thanks! :D

    Richard,

If you're willing to share, would you PM me your hypotheses? As a fellow psych major, I'm curious what you're up to.

    Haha, sure thing! ;)

Seriously though, the questionnaire and subsequent analysis is completely harmless.

Thanks to all of you who've complete it so far. Much appreciated!

    Responded.

If you're going to analyze posts here, you really need to subscribe. There's some active forums (especially the off topic Politics and Religion forum) that could be revealing re: posting style.

I'll look into costs and such but I should be able to get enough data without it. Thanks for the suggestion.

This is great advice - if you want to see how aggressive posters can be to each other, it's no-holds-barred in the Political and Religion discussion in the subscribed section. And then they're all nice to each other in the Silver Subscribed.

Gold gives you full access, but Silver is all you'll need to do your analysis. Otherwise you're missing the rough side of town, and I think selective filtering is a bad thing in the academic world, eh? :D
