Will's first Ferarri...

Not a real Ferrari... but cool none the less...

I found this pedal car on eBay and although my boy is too little for it, I got such a good deal that I couldn't pass. I added the Ferrari decals, numbers, etc because it looks a lot like a 1952 Ferrari 500 F2. He loves just sitting in it and making car engine noises. He has gasoline in his blood.

The car had a badge on the front that was shaped like the Ferrari shield, but it said "A/F". I removed it and planned to put a Ferrari front badge, but the rectangle Ferrari decal didn't look right so I put a Scuderia Ferrari shield on the front. It looks out of place, but who cares? I stuck the Ferrari badge on the back and added a vintage looking plate (decal).

The 1952 Ferrari 500 F2's are the most famous of all Ferrari formula cars because Alberto Ascari used the car to win his first world championship, winning all but one race with the simple 500. (He was driving at the Indy 500 so he missed a race)

The following season, Ascari won his second world championship, and Ferrari won all but the final race, which was won by Juan Manuel Fangio, back in racing after an accident which had damaged his neck.

Ascari won 9 straight races in the 500, a world championship record which still stands today. The 500 won all but one race it was entered in, making it the most statistically successful car in the history of the FIA world championship.

 

I was scouting around ebay for odd ball Ferrari stuff and came across the car. It was a local guy who bought it for his grandson 6 years ago and it was too big for the child. The grandson was 1 and he moved to Dallas so the grandfather never had the chance to give it to him. When we picked up the car it looked brand new, un-used.

These cars are bigger than most pedal cars and used to sell for $700-$800. This guy paid $750. I paid him $175.

Today you can find them for about $400-$600 with shipping if you do a Google for "ferrari f2 pedal car". They come in red, chrome, black and yellow.

Again, Will is too young to use it yet, so it's just decoration for now. But he'll grow into it and soon want me to strip one of our scooters for an engine.

He turned 1 last month so he has a few years before he can use the pedal car.

His very first outting as a baby was to the GA Tech car show in 2006. So we got him started early. I think the first photo of him out of the house is next to the Enzo, F50, F40, 288 at the show in 2006.
