Should I pay up and say nothing?

  1. A wager was made, pay it no matter the cost.

  2. Pay up if you have to but try to reason your way out.

  3. If it is soo bad, talk to your friend about it.

  4. Leave a fork in his neck and walk away.

My problem is I lost and as all hard core gamblers know, there are bets that come along where you KNOW you can't lose. Well I lost and now being the gambler I am, I have a price to pay. I've always paid up and on time but this one is almost stupid.

    Story:

A friend who I usually gamble with offered me a bet and I thought he was kidding, so I laughed and told him why, I thought it was a weak bet for him. It turned out he was serious and now I had to back pedal just to keep him interested in the bet He brought to ME. Well damn, he was ready to back out and I added on a little something that I shouldn't have added... and lost the damn bet.

Is begging /weaseling out of a bet a pride killer for life?

Care to divulge any other details of the story? :)

At first it sounded like you didn't agree to the bet...but then it sounds like you committed with your little cherry on top.

If it were me I would pay.

Nothing wrong with gamling, but don't EVER put something on the line you can't/won't follow through on.

Besides, it should be painful to lose. If you can't feel it, you're not betting enough.

    Gebus no help here.

It waaaaaas a sure bet... right up until I lost.

I guess I was in a playful mood when I took the bet and sweetened it to keep the hopes of easy money alive.

The final word is, I lost 1500 bucks and I'm to buy a car that I don't really want instead of a car I really really want. To make matters 11 million times worse, I added that last part as the "sweetener" after I basically convinced him that the wager was lopsided towards me.

    I hate me.

No matter how much money you have or how high you go, there are only two things you ever really own. These are:

    1. Your education.
    2. Your integrity.

No matter what happens to you. If you are beaten, threatened, tortured, hurt beyond your fears. These belong to you. If you give them up, you are lost. Keep them!

Nothing says it better than the following gem from "Guys and Dolls":

One of these days in your travels, a guy is going to show you a brand-new deck of cards on which the seal is not yet broken. Then this guy is going to offer to bet you that he can make the jack of spades jump out of this brand-new deck of cards and squirt cider in your ear. But, son, do not accept this bet, because as sure as you stand there, you're going to wind up with an ear full of cider.

That's a tough pill to swallow, man, but chalk it up to a learning experience and move on. Before you have to learn another lesson the hard way, here's another piece of advice - don't "chase" your money.

In "Confessions of a Winning Poker Player," Jack King said, "Few players recall big pots they have won, strange as it seems, but every player can remember with remarkable accuracy the outstanding tough beats of his career." It seems true to me, cause walking in here, I can hardly remember how I built my bankroll, but I can't stop thinking about the way I lost it. - Rounders

What was the bet anyway? Sounds like it wasn't such a sure thing afterall.... Except in the case of a metaphysical certitude, wagering things you can't afford to lose isn't a smart policy.

Thanks, one would do well to remember that.

More thanks, I don't recall the movies but both sound true enough.

Thanks again, you sound like a priest... from an OTB lounge.

It was such a sure bet... I could afford to pay but I really don't want to. The car is purple and I have to drive it for an entire year as my primary car. It has to collect more kms then any other car I have.

The bet was a card game, him against me. I have a fairly incredible record with this game and he is quite average. I tried to end the game too quickly and fell behind... then far behind. I ended up losing by a very small margin but nonetheless losing.

This car thing is going to break my back... a purple car... a purple car with zero appeal... a purple car with zero appeal that will keep me from buying another car that I want and have been wanting for a couple of years. Perhaps with time I can secure the other car.

Thanks for all of the help.......... not so much really.

I'll have to load a picture awwww ****.

pay up and drive the car with pride. when people see you in it they'll know you're a honorable man who keeps his word and pays his debts. they'll be laughing with you and your pal may let you off early when he sees you're not welching.

Whoooaaa a card game??? A "sure thing"??? You really are weird :) I was expecting the bet to be something like he was trying to tell you that the Empire State building is the tallest structure in the world or something. I'm almost afraid to know what the card game was.............

Could I put a disclaimer on the car?

"I lost a bet and now I'm driving this, you do the math."

"I lost a wager and this is the cost of losing."

"I lost a wager and this is what gambling can do to you."

You never know I may get grants from the government for a "stop gambling" campaign.

i would only pay if i had the means to do so. if its going to interfere with financial decisions i'd tell my "friend" that the time is unfavorable to pay up.

if the tables were turned i would have no problems brushing something like that off. a retarded bet should mean nothing to real life circumstances

He's already got the cash, I just don't want to be stuck in a POS car and not be able to have the car I want. I think with a little bit of time, I'll be able to pick up the other car though.

Wait... so all you have to do is put more miles on the odometer than any other car you own individually, or combined?

Just drive it around town for about 20-30 miles, then walk/bus it to wherever you need to go for the rest of the year... hehehe.

On second thought... thats a bad idea...

but do it if your friend insists on you doing so.

I've already thought of that, my idea is to give the car to a neighbor who doesn't have a car, a kid or someone who will run the miles up on it and I'll drive another car. If I'm heading to meet/ see my deal old pal, I'll just take the purple car and he can see the rolling odometer for himself.

Oh and the purple car would be parked on the street, if someone should take a stroll by they would see the car semi/ quasi parked in front of my house... across the street.

To answer your question, the purple car has to register more kms this year, than any other car I own.
