My tribute to Gilles is in the corner of my model/memorabilia cabinet. The model is 1:12th scale, and I also have his autograph.

The 1981 Belgium race saw tragedy on the first day of practice when an Osella mechanic was killed when hit by Reutemann's car. Apparently the Zolder pit was very narrow and dangerous. This led some of the drivers, led by Villeneuve, to stage a protest against the poor facilities. The protest took place right on the starting grid.
When the race was finally begun, tragedy struck again when an Arrows mechanic was struck when he tried to restart Patrese's car which had stalled on the grid. The winner of the much-marred race was Reutemann, with Laffite second and a new rookie Nigel Mansell was third.

The 1981 Monaco GP proved an interesting race for Villeneuve. Piquet had the pole for the race around the Principality, but Villeneuve put on a masterful show of driving skill to put his Ferrari on the front row. Piquet made the best start and was followed by Villeneuve. But the Ferrari could not keep up the pace and fell back. Piquet retired after a lapping miscue and Jones inherited the lead. Near the end of the race however, the Williams began to suffer fuel feed problems and Villeneuve passed Jones for the Monaco victory. Jones managed to hold on to second place.

The following Spanish Grand Prix also proved rewarding for Villeneuve. At the start Laffite held the pole but Jones soon took the lead. When Jones went off course Villeneuve inherited the lead. However the Ferrari had handling problems and soon a train of four cars formed up behind him. Lafitte was stuck in second place. He tried many times to pass Villeneuve but he was unsucessful. Villeneuve went on to record a victory at the Spanish Grand Prix and Lafitte had to settle for second place.
