This is probably important enough to warrant a new thread, lest it get lost in the voluminous "cool number plates" thread.

DO NOT ASSUME YOUR OWNERSHIP INTEREST IS CORRECTLY NOTED BY VICROADS EVEN IF ALL APPROPRIATE DOCUMENTATION WAS LODGED AND TRANSFER OF RIGHTS EFFECTED AT THE TIME OF PURCHASE.

I ordered a replacement set of enamel heritage plates at the time I purchased "288" (April 2007). The plates have not turned up so I went to my local Vicroads to see what the story was. To my astonishment, the plates were still registered in the previous owners name and the replacement plates had been sent out to him........... This can't be happening

The seller and I met at Vicroads Carlton head office in April to conduct the deal. We both fill out the Vicroads transfer form and sign a written contract of sale. We both go to the counter and watch the Vicroads staff member conduct the transfer on the spot. She confirms that the transfer has been effected and I order the replacement plates. I have copies of everything and file them away. So how the hell did they screw it up? No explanation as the paperwork I produced confirmed EVERYTHING was done to Vicroads procedures. The whole thing is now subject to an internal investigation at Vicroads. Given my documentation I am confident of a satisfactory resolution.

It gets better!! So now my confidence in the whole procedure is shot to hell and I decide to check on my other 2 heritage plates. You guessed it......... "360" is not in my name and in fact the computer shows that it was transferred to someone in Camberwell though it is not on a vehicle. OMFG !!! The local Vicroads lady has no explanation. So I ask her to check if the computer shows the plate on my old 360 Modena. It confirms it was on that car from 2001 to 2005. She remembers me doing the transfer to the Ferrari as I did it at that branch and she happened to be the person who did it. So how the hell did it get registered to someone else if I have not sold it or signed any transfer of rights form? No explanation...........
So I go to work and get the sale contract and the transfer of rights form AND the physical plate. Faced with all that, they register "360" under my name!
Again, all Vicroads paperwork and procedures were filled out and lodged.

My last heritage plate is on my CSL and WAS registered correctly. So only one out of the three plates was correct despite all the correct forms being filled out and personally lodged by me.

Given the money that is involved in these plates I am absolutely dumbfounded at how poorly it is administered at Vicroads. If anyone reading this has heritage or custom plates, I would be checking if your interests are correctly noted with Vicroads ASAP.

that is shocking.Without talking $s we all have good idea of the $s involved.Having said that,I've seen many a land title lost and a few never transfered to new owners. My money is on YOU to get the correct result.

I am 100% confident as I have all the proof and everything was done correctly.

Imagine if I had stumped up $2 million bucks for heritage plate # 1

I reckon you are safer to have the plates actually ON a vehicle rather than on "self retention".

just go out and buy a old cheap car and put plate on it?I remember when my father had 87,130 and 221 always were on cars, but in those days the plates were owned by Vic Govt/roads.Only way to sell them was to sell them on a car.

    # 360 was put on my wifes car the moment they sorted it out. # 288 will go on my 308 as soon as that mess is sorted. # 275 is already on my CSL.

    I should be so lucky:D

However, back on topic, my recent experiences in WA in transferring private plates would alert anyone to chasing down the last bit of documentation to satisfy yourself that (a) you own the plate (b) duty is paid and (c) if you are not putting them on your car, know where they are and have a tracking record.

I think you are pretty safe if it is actually ON a car. Self retention is another matter altogether!

Also do NOT trust a dealer to do what you tell them to do when you sell/trade a car through them.
