Last Friday I drove Cal 36 from US 101 all the way to Susanville. I was in the motorhome and it occured to me that this road is a great sports car or bike road. On the west end it's very curvy and narrow and on the east end it has nice curves with good delineation. In the middle there's a bunch of whoop-de-do's that would make it interesting. I'm sure that a lot of you guys would catch a little air on that road. I was driving very slowly and nearly caught air in the motorhome. Also there's a few places where the road curves sharply right after going over a ridge making it a surprise.

There's also lot of vistas that would make a good backdrop for pictures. I'll have to drive it in my 308 some day.

I've been hoping for a long time to do this road, and still haven't... It's kinda far for me to get to, drive the 4-hour travel time on the road itself, and then find a way back home, all in one day. So, I'd make a weekend of it, but I doubt that the wife would be interested in spending a weekend "exploring a road".

More info on the road here, for those who aren't aware of it:

Would you happen to know if Highway 299, which runs north of Hwy. 36, is any good?

Hiway 36 is an awesome road, I do it a couple of times each year. The first time I ran it in a Boxster S, and I DID catch air. Lots of unexpected elevation changes on the Red Bluff side. One year I almost ran out of gas because there are no gas stations. Its a lot of fun on a bike too. Not a lot of traffic, and cars tend to pull over and let others by. Be careful around Lassen as CHP likes to hang there. Definatelty one of my favorite norcal roads.

299 is great on a bike as there is lots of motor home traffic in the summer, and very few passing lanes. Also heavily patrolled.

I took a great trip up that way 2 weeks ago -- the boring ride Friday night from SJ to Redding, then we headed west on 299 to Weaverville and spent the night. Saturday morning, we headed north on 3 up to Fort Jones and across Scott River Road to Scott Bar. From there we picked up 96 and headed south, stopping at Happy Camp for lunch and continuing south through the Hoopa reservation until we picked up 299 again. We then took 299 over to Arcata/Eureka where we spent the second night. Sunday morning, we hopped on 101 south, the crossed over to 1 at Leggett and followed 1 all the way to SF.

An amazing 1000 mile round trip -- and I was ready to do it again. The Saturday drive going up 3 and down 96 was just surreal -- amazing roads, amazing scenery and absolutely no civilization to speak of. The drive to Leggett on 101 was the only place we saw the CHP on the whole trip (there were at least 5 shooting radar) and we didn't catch up to any traffic on 1 from Leggett until we were at least 3/4 the way to the coast.

The drive down 1 made me wish I had a bike so I could pass, but once I calmed down and just enjoyed the stunning California coast line, it wasn't so bad.

I was just recently turned onto 36 by a friend who rides -- I think that road could be on my agenda for next year's field trip.
