saw this and thought of you guys here in the 206/246 section http://www.classiccarsforsale.co.uk/classic-car-page.php/carno/16386
I'm puzzled. I had a Dino in my shop back in the 80s that I thought was one of the prototypes. It was unique in that the engine was longitudinal and it had 13-inch pentastar wheels. When I had the car, it was silver but I was told that the original factory color was yellow. The lower part of the seat were just pads that rested in recesses in the floor. Any info??????????????????????????????????? Bob Z.
That sounds like a 206 S chassis. The purple one is a Prototype for the 206 street cars. Strangely Dino Competizone which was built on 206S chassis 034 also is stamped 10523. Photos (c) Marcel Massini Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Hello, Mr Napolis - (AKA Jim!) Unfortunatelly, not that car. The one I had was single headlight, very similar to the production Dinos. No spoiler or large vents in the front hood. Also, it was left hand drive. Bob Z.
I saw the Barney Purple 206 when it was stored in Warren OH, and at that time it was owned by General Marsh. My understanding was that it was the original color. It was still a beautiful car none the less.
Yes, the original color was purple, or "Viola". I have a photo of this car which I took at the Can-Am at Bridgehampton in September 1968. it was being driven into the pits by Stirling Moss at the time. I sent General Marsh a copy of this photo several years ago. Dave Olimpi
ooooooo Our 206 (1st to be imported to the UK) used to be purple, before being sprayed (by ferrari) in a 'dino special red'.
Yes, there was one car like this with a North-South engine in an almost standard looking yellow car. I sold it to HK collector Michael Mak in the late 80's or early 90's. Don Williams at Blackhawk might know today's whereabouts. As I recall it had a one piece engine lid, no luggage lid.
Andrew and Jim. Yes, the car had a one-piece engine cover. It was quite long in that it covered the entire engine and gearbox - the latter a Hewland, as I recall. From memory, it seems that it was originally some sort of competition car that was turned over to Pininfarina to use the chassis for a styling exercise. I do rememeber that it was a nightmare to remove the engine - the space between the engine and sump had frame rails going through and it was necessary to disconnect the sump from the engine before lifting it. The car is pictured in F&M but I do not have a copy handy. Bob Z.
Hi Was the engine a comp. engine like the one in Dino Competizone? http://ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=161714 (Dual Plug) Best
the viola dino prototype that is for sale in japan solicted an interesting response from the seller when i questioned his price. general marsh advertised the dino for quite some time at $140k. this was two years ago. the seller told me he had purchased (?) an original daytona spyder that dk engineering was brokering. unfortuantely, the seller of the daytona backed out at the last second leaving his deposit (full purchase price) already in the hands of dk engineering. based on this and the fact that he was/is a collector, they sold him the 206 for the same price. i don't know if any of this can be verified, but his logic in pricing is - since at the time, he paid daytona spyder money for the car, it is still worth daytona spyer money. his $900k asking price was quoted as very firm when i first enquired. that was earlier this spring.
Hi, Jim - no, the engine was very normal looking. In fact, shortly after, I rebuilt a FIAT Dino 206 and the engines seemed identical. It had a six-throw crank that was damaged and very difficult to replace. I was told that the car wound up in Texas and was sold by a dealer there but that was not confirmed. If you have an F&M handy, you can see a picture of the car, along with a brief description. Bob Z.
there was a dino that was here in houston and owned by john mecom that had that layout. it was one of the prototypes/design studies by pininfarina, but wasn't either the dino 206 prototype or dino competizione
I think that't the car ou speak about. Serial numer 00106. Longitudinal V6. Go to the Dinoregister to see the history. Image Unavailable, Please Login
