I was spending the afternoon looking at which gauges to put in my track car for next year and I stumbled across this unit which is technically out of production but a few are still around.

It sounds interesting for RPM shift point, water & oil temps as well as pressure warnings.

These operational examples aren't exactly the same environment I'd be operating in so I'm a bit sceptical.

I just wonder if the display is all that visible on a track in the daylight and also if vibration might make it unreadable?

Has any one else ever heard anything about these or actually used them under track conditions?

    Bob,

Have you ever driven a vette with HUD? I think the GM unit would be best available due to the ability to spend $ to get it right. Well I got a Z06 with HUD and it works awesome @ nite. It works ok most of the day but disappears even at the brightest setting during the day. If the sun is bright outside squinting to see the HUD well...it is easier just to look at the analog guage. I think HUD is more of a gimick. For a track car I would contact JoTec on this site he sells I think AIM dash which is for racecars and he says is bright enough for open wheelers. Also they weight nothing.

I wasn't looking to this as a primary gauge source but was thinking of it for warning lights that flash at the bottom of the windshield and also the sweeping
tach graphics with a shift light which would be in my peripheral vision. So maybe the bright light issues wouldn't be as critical?

So I don't know if this reasonable or not. I know I can get the hard analog gauges with a warning for oil/water temps mounted to the side. A separate flashing
shift light as well. My car is just too quiet by the time I have balaclava and helmet on. I hear other cars behind and in front of me first!

I just happened to run across this and thought it might be useful.

Has anyone actually used this particular unit in their street car?

My wife's Miata has the DEFI unit for a boost gauge. I think it originally came with a small piece of mirrored tint that was supposed to be attached to the windshield to help it show up better in the day time, however the original owner never installed that. My opinion is that it is too dim in the daytime and too bright at night. Newer units might have an auto dimming feature, but I'm not sure.

Thanks Aaron. Yes they do have auto dimming now but that's not a concern for me.
I was thinking of either the model that's just a sweep of RPM and MPH/KM in digits with a shift blinker plus a pair of separate gauges with flashing warning indicators for oil/water temps

    or

The unit that also flashes oil/water temp warnings and data.

I already have water temp and oil pressure and would like something in my vision periphery as warning for temperatures.

It does sound like this method would get invisible when direct sunlight hit the windshield at certain angles. So maybe it's a total waste of time.
The RPM/MPH unit isn't that expensive though.
