It appears my 79 BB512 coolant thermostat has a crack in the housing. This is the newer type which is a self contained unit which the parts catalogue shows as being used on the injected Boxer. It looks like a "cup and ball".

It is leaking from the part where the cup covers the ball (hope this is making sense).

Has anyone ordered one of these recently? From where and how much? Can it be sodered?

Got most of the hoses off last night. Going to pull the rest off tonight. Real PITA

Can't really help with your quest (other than to note that I see US suppliers have 106393 anywhere from $172 to $300), but am curious about your modification -- do you also have the other T-shaped water casting from a BBi with an unused thermo-time switch and water temp thermister installed?

    Hi Steve,

I think, if i am understanding your question, the answer is yes.

I ran across a couple of threads on this site and the one that JRV started that mentioned that this was a "kit" installed on some of the cars. I believe this may also be in the workshop manual translated to English by Angelo Wallace but don't have it here at the office. I don't know if it was done at the factory or done later in its life.

When you look at the parts book, say on the owners site, the thermostat for the 365GT4BB and BB512 show a housing (I thinks its 4 way) that seperates to access the thermostat. Mine is a 3 way enclosed thermocouple which is downstream from the "T-shaped water casting" you are describing. It looks the same as the one in the BBi parts manual which, as you point out, is 106393.

I'll check the workshop manual tonight and post a picture tomorrow.

I remember hearing about this change up as well, it was to eliminate a vibration in the lines that you could hear in the car.

That's it Newman. That's where I read it. In the workshop manual there is a part about drilling two small holes in the thermostat itself to eliminate the vibration as well.

I just looked at the"cars sold" on Sheehan's site. The following picture is from a 79 carbed Boxer like mine. In the upper right you can see the black ball thermostat which is downstream of the T-shaped water casting. Just about all of the 512BB cars I looked at on his site show the same.

And thats what mine looks like as well, the housing itself is copper or plated copper then painted black. Try to stick with the upgraded one unless points at a show is the goal.

There were two theromstat mods to the 365 and 512 cars.

The first one, which retained the original "drop in" thermostat, had you drill a couple of small holes in the thermostat to reduce chassis felt vibrations.

The second modification ( much more involved) required a couple of new alu water tubes, some new rubber water hoses, and a one-piece, self-contained replacement thermostat. This "redesign of the thermostat plumbing and new thermostat" totally eliminated the vibration issues...and resulted in better water flow. This set up was/is identically as delivered on all bbi cars.

I've had this mod on my 365 for 15+ years, without issue.

Drew: I've got a new spare thermostat on the shelf. You're welcome to it, just replace it when you can "find a deal..."

    Regards,
    David

    Thanks David,

I may take you up on that. Let me see what I find tomorrow.

I have to get the thing out tonight (PITA). There is a small chance it could be a hose but I'm pretty sure the "hat" has become unsoddered from the "ball" after observing it under good light while running.

You don't happen to know the diameter of the smaller hose that exits the bottom of the thermostat or better yet a source. I'm sure Rutlands has one for $100 but $10 for the right ID hose with the approximate shape would be better. Mine has ballonned and needs to be replaced. In fact I think I'm just going to cut it off as its distorted enough that it will not come off the nipple. It is about 9" long and has a slight curve in it where it meets the thermostat.

    Drew,

The lower hose nipple is 27.5 mm o.d. Looking at how I did it on my car, the lower hose is indeed a OE factory part, due to the sharp, super tight radius turn...

And...yup, looks like a real pain to get to.

Just pulled the thermostat and it looks like its pressed together. Don't trust to repair it.

Rock, could you PM me or e-mail with a price on the thermostat and hose if you have it.

    From the owner's site:

    THERMOSTAT C/W HOUSING (79): 106393

Small hose about 8" long and 27.5mm ID: 112028

Thanks for all of your help tonight. Good to have friends that care about cars. Good to have friends.

    Regards,

    Drew

PS: Hey look on the bright side. When I first saw the puddle under the car I popped the rear bonnet and looked down the firewall. My initial thought was the water pump (less than a year since engine out and redone) had given up the ghost. :)
