Ferrari's clients get a nice surprise at the Bologna Motor Show, with the announcement that all Ferrari models from 2008 will be fitted with Brembo brakes along with carbon ceramic material (CCM) brake disks. Not only is Ferrari the world's first car manufacturer to offer such an expensive option as standard but was also the first to introduce the technology five years ago on the Enzo. With over 85% of orders on certain models including CCM brakes, Ferrari though it was appropriate to offer it range wide, but additionally to cross publicize this year's Formula 1 double world championship.

From the press release, “Brakes featuring CCM discs offer much more responsive braking as well as consistently excellent performance in intensive use. One of the most obvious advantages to adopting them is their exceptional fade resistance – fade in fact compromises the driver’s feeling of control when it comes to the pressure required on the brake pedal and responsiveness.”

“The CCM discs have a longer life under normal conditions, a fact that has clear financial advantages. Furthermore, even with continual track use, CCM brakes offer greater resistance to wear for better durability on track. “

“The CCM braking system also cuts around 15 kg off the car’s total weight which not only improves overall performance but also reduces unsprung mass and thus improves vehicle dynamics and ride comfort.“

So, if CC Brakes are now 'standard', does the base price MSRP of the car go up accordingly?

I ordered a car and paid $17k+ for my CC brakes, and if next year they are standard equipment at the same base MSRP, I will be EXTREMELY PISSED OFF!!!!!

This is a back door way for Ferrari to raise prices 5-8%, especially on 430's. The increase in gross profit is probably at least 10% for cars with cc brakes. Smart business move IMO although I think this makes the price of a typical F1 coupe well over 200K USD. That may make some buyers balk and shorten the wait time, at least in the US.

Porsche has never offered CCB's as standard equipment across their range. The only Porsche that I am aware of that had CCB's as standard equipment was the CGT

I think that the 996 GT2 also had them as standard equipment.

Indeed. Ignoring R&D, the cost to Ferrari of adding CCM brakes is, my guess, around $5k per. Charging $17k is a nice fat extra helping of gravy (esp important in the US, where the US$ sinks to new lows). If Porsche can offer ceramic brakes for $8k (and you know there's a nice fat profit-margin whenever Porsche prices are concerned) -- well, just think how much juice Ferrari are getting by charging over twice that.

And, I think we'd be extremely lucky for prices to only go up 8% as a result of this.

Do you really think that Ferrari is discounting the new products?
I'll think the future will be very happy for you if it turns out that $17k is cheaper than if the car prices increses to $25k, $30k, ... or ?

I always thought the Spider was $10K more then the coupe. $30K is a big diff, maybe Ferrari raised the price point.

    Derek,
Do those prices include cc brakes? My manual '05 had a base of 170,045. Adding cc brakes would have made it 185,409. before other options. That's only 6366. less than the 08 number above.

    Dave,

Yes, these quotes include the ceramic brakes. Base MSRP on the '06 F430 did not increase but the cost of options did, the ceramics were $15,364 in 2005 and increased to $16,808 in 2006. Also of note, GG tax on your '05 F430 was $4,500, it has since decreased to $3,000.

The F430 Spider has always had a premium of approximately 15% vs the Coupe.

My 2007 spider (three pedals) base was $206,063 including GG tax, prep and shipping. The same 2008 spider has increased 16K. What a coincidence, that's the price of CC brakes.
