If you're thinking of racing in the Ferrari Historics, you better check with "Old Guy" first. I doubt that this car qualifies, but what do I know? :)

    Is this really a Ferrari?

Did Ferrari officially sanction this car? Does that make sense?

Just looking at the pictures, the engine is Ferrari, and the body resembles a 288, but other than that, it seems like a hand built race car.

If I build a frame, put a 308 engine in it and paint it red does that mean it is a Ferrari?

There is a finite number of serial numbers that Ferrari has stamped on frames. I don't think this car has one, therefore it's not a Ferrari, or does the engine alone constitute it to being a Ferrari? Or does the body have a Ferrari serial number?

    What am I missing?

Pretty sure this is a tube-frame IMSA car, rather than a semi-tub SCCA GT car, like the one Tom Shelton ran for Ed Wettach successfully several years ago.

The few SCCA cars I've seen are converted from street cars and are equipped with an oval-tube factory chassis. Those should be legit cars.

This one looks like it was built fromn scratch...

So does that make it a Ferrari? Did it race in a series in which Ferrari would get points in a Constructors Championship?

When I posted originally, I thought of the car as "Ferrari powered," but not a Ferrari. The post title simply tracked the eBay listing. I'd be surprised to find the car is legal for the Historic Challenge.

I do think it's a nice looking car.

This is a great car , I remember thinking I would purchase it when it was for sale at The Checkered Flag Collection in Millville, NJ. Back in the early 90's . I was unable to fit inside it being 6 ' 3" .

It was sold & I watched it run at many Ferrari Club events over the following years .

    There were 3 cars built

    +1

I'd be surprised if the car is legal for Historic Challenge, but as Robert C says, the car (or Huffaker cars like it) did collect points for the manufacturer in International (ACCUS) sanctioned (IMSA) competition. I know Doug Pirrone's monster did at Lime Rock...

Has it or any other Huffaker tube-frame car run in the Historic Challenge?

The LFSC car was an SCCA car built out of a 308, it has the oval-tube frame, a VIN and uses a Ferrari transverse engine and transaxle. Like Ed Wettach's old GT-2 car (and others Bob Wallace helped construct back in the day), I would think those cars would qualify for Historic Challenge, but one would have to ask Dave S. about that.
