With all the discussion of 'dated styling' on the low prices thread, I decided to take off the side strakes to see how it looked. The original Pininfarina designs did not have strakes until very late in the design iterations. Some stories say this is to meet certain laws on intake grills.

These strakes are a key focal point for how people see this car, so I will never alter the car to such an extent that they cannot easily be reinstalled.

I do like the look without the strakes. Like a Koenig without the fender flairs.

It only took about 2 hours per side. I am undecided about the vertical vane which I reinstalled on the right. It is the only part of the strakes that is functional (IMO), but unless you are driving hard, the most cooling load is probably in city driving, where the vanes are not helping. I think the overall look is better without the vane, or possibly with a color-matched vane.

But, as has been pointed out several times lately, looks are in the eye of the beholder (or owner) so to each his own.

    Certainly a different look!
I happen to like strakes (even on 348).
You can now change the look. So, if you blow by the police one day, you can change the look and they won't think it is you the next time they see you!

I have ALWAYS wondered how that would look on an otherwise stock car. I most definitely like it. If the intake screens could look fit more with the look, the better (black mesh or other). I'd love to eventually see it 'full side' when you get it out of the garage. For now I'd say a big bravo!

I wnted to do a beauty shot, but it rained all day in Tucson, so you are stuck with the garage shot for now.

That's one of the few changes I would perform, and for the same reasons. I just like the cleaner look, even on the F512M (no Koenig flares needed - Sorry, WilliamH).

Interesting how this goes with the threads on the TR/M nose thread in a similar way.

Hey Tom, do the guys at Deering work on your car? They used to work on all my exotics when I was at UofA

I haven't had it long enough for anyone to work on it. I usually do all my own work, so don't know much about the local repair shops. Hope you enjoyed your time at U of A. My youngest son just graduated from there last May. I think they teached him reel gud. I'm a Boilermaker myself.

If you leave those strakes off be sure to come up with some screens to go over those radiators. Road debris & small animals will make short work of them.

I agree, I also think it totally changes the look of the car.

I won't do it to mine, however, if I were do do it, I would leave off the side vanes, remove the strakes from the rear and put matching black mesh grilles over the side radiators and between the uncovered tail light lenses. This would change the whole theme of the strake design and give the car a very custom, personalized look. Cool stuff that I've thought about doing if I ever get a TR Stramann spider.

Also slow children. Darwin and all ;)

Because of the curve of the body I would think solid ( heavy ) objects not to be much of a problem, including stones.
Airflow would seem to follow the body.
I think I remember that Ferrari originally designed the car without strakes but had to comply with regs requiring protected openings on radiators.

Here re some full-view pics from sunny Arizona. I Think I am staying with the strakeless look, but will never give up the ability to restore it to its original. Who knows where the future will go, and I know the value of factory original. Yes, I still have the original wheels and engine bonnet, but I prefer the tire choices in 17" for driving.

Nice look, but not for me. Cheese grater makes the TR as far as I am concerned.

I can appreciate that point of view. The strakes are definitely one of the styling details that define the TR. I may go back some day, but for now its clean.

I like it better than I even thought I would! If you squint, you can imagine Pininfarina meeting his objective... then having to coalesce to "other" nagging requirements. Yes, strakes defined the car; no one said that definition has to stick. Great going Tom. I'd go so far as to say I love it.

Looks great without the strakes !
Much more modern, if thats worth anything.
The openings are monstrous compared to wimpy ZO-6, 911, Shelby GT500 et al rear scoops.

It's different (and not bad looking) but my first reaction at seeing the full side shot was "replica!" I think the aftermarket wheels - while nice - added to my replica impression. I think the strakes personify the TR so I personally prefer them.

Those scoops have a lot higher air volume requirement on the TR than on the other cars. The 911 Turbo feeds the engine intake while the others are brake cooling. TR has to cool the radiators without the full ram effect of a front-mounted radiator.
