Some photos - The scissors lift worked beautifully - highly recommended. The homemade stand worked perfectly - nary a groan. The mobil home adjustable jacks fitted on the stand were a big help. The AC was easy to remove with the engine part way out thru the fenderwell. Never broke the seals. The tie-off to the side was easy with plenty of hose length. It was easy to keep the hoses relatively straight. - call me a treehugger! The Ferrari shop manual was a nearly perfect 'cook book' procedure. Now if I could only do this in half the time..... Can you explain more regarding "The mobil home adjustable jacks fitted on the stand were a big help". and do you have pics on how high you had to jack it up to clear the body? Thanks!
I will use my scissor lift to do the major too... . Great tool. Any issues with tipping forward with the scissor lift? Any issues with clearance? Any close up pics of the dolly you created?
The stand rolled under the chassis at the height where the car is shown sitting on the jackstands. Then the scissor lift took the chassis & engine off the jack stands. The jack stands were pulled, and then the scissor lowered the engine subframe back down into the stand. Once the subframe was unbolted, the scissor lifted the chassis off and left the engine subframe sitting in the stand. The overall chassis lift was quite low. All that needs to happen is for the intake plenum to clear the rear chassis - perhaps another 14" or so. It is real easy with the scissor. No problems with the chassis weight bias. The scissor is pulled fairly far forward in order to get clearance from the rear subframe. The stand was made wide enough that its wheels pass around the outside of the scissor. I suspect a scissor is an easier way to service this car than a 2 post lift. I had free access all the way around the car & could go in the car unencumbered (to position the gear lever). I like to think it is far safer than the jack stand/ hydraulic jack method that several folks have used here on FChat. The bracket that cradles the chassis frame is what I refer to as the 'mobile home' jacks. It comes with the 5/8" stud bolt attached & when you add the nut it can be used to 'jack' up or down as the stud is about 6" long overall (you can't see it in the shot, it is in a 5/8" hole thru the timber. I 'think' that was their original purpose in life - got 'em straight out of Lowes hardware in the section where they sell the framing ties. I'll post a photo of the hardware bits after the engine is reinstalled. The stand is a simple, glued/ screwed 2x2, 2x6 and 4x4 combo. Hope this helps.... This is the kind of thread I love and these are the kinds of tools/resources I could find myself using. Keep the info and pics coming. CC
Dear Ferraristi, Now, this is really cool. A TR, once you're used to it, really is nice to work on. ....a heck of alot more engine-bay room to work in than my VT roadster. Shamile Freeze...Miami Vice !
~Hmmmm.... true, nice to work on, but it ain't over 'till the fat lady sings!~ I'll diagram the stand details after the engine is out. Got the X-ost system today. Straight from Italy thru Daniel at Ricambi - in just 10 days. Great service! Gorgeous silencer. I'll post some shots of the welds in a couple of weeks - truly a nice job. Plenty of penetration & no undercutting... the perfect 'overlapping nickels' characteristic of a TIG weld. Wish I could weld like that! It is a lot lighter than the original with a significantly smaller silencer volume... that translates to either a restrictive system... or a loud system.... I bet I know which it is Hear a similar one here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d_eIj9Z1bA4 Like a kid in a candy store! I'll be back with more in a couple of weeks. 'Till then, Thanks all, Ciao Vince
Ciao! ~ Engine went back in - water leak past the pump seal too many types of seals over the years - wrong one was in the car from the last service and a differerent (but still wrong) version went in during my service ~ Engine back out - pumps seal fixed and hydrotested prior to engine install this time with the right seal ~Company says - move to Moscow the engine is still on the floor! ~ Engine is back in the car runs rough but was completely tight for both oil & H2O ~ Replaced the injectors - thinking the long idle period before the service had left them clogged ~ Gotta leave town ~ Cars is off to Seattle (from Alaska) finally a time to get the seat belt recall done & get some diagnoses help ~ FoS thinks the left bank's rich condition is due to bad valve timing - I don't agree - - car goes into storage (dang!) - The left cat was burned out when I bought the car 10 yrs ago - too rich. this is not a 'new' post service issue - The new X-Ost system went on without a precat and new cats (HyperFlow) the car sounds absolutely fantastic - The left bank's air flow sensor has some stiction - I suspect there are other issues there as well. This needs full diagnosis. ~ Move to Moscow.... NOW I'll send pics from FoM - they are just down the street from Red Square (and my apt) When I return, I'll spring for a four gas analyser & dive into the FI system. Gotta build my retirement home first so I can get my baby into its own home & out of storage. This ain't gonna be an overnight deal. One of these days, I'll be cruising around Tahoe.... good things take time. Thanks for the query! Hope all is well with the other FChat folks - I've been super busy these days. Rgds, Vince
Dear Ferraristi, Hey Vince ! Still in Moscow? We're all interested to know what you find in you TR. Who would of thought.... ......."Ferrari of Moscow is just down the street from Red Square" ......The Bush regime has nationalized banks and "socialized" Wall street Hmmmm.......strange times ! Shamile Freeze....Miami Vice !
Sadly - those ultimate answers are a couple of years out :-( My money is on a FI issue. "Strange times" is an understatement... hang on & enjoy the ride! Rgds, Vince
