I need to replace the telescoping light on the interior roof console on my Testarossa. How do I get to the light without doing something stupid? :)

My guess would be to stick a couple small screwdrivers in the two small catches toward the very back and pry down the black plastic cover. The cover should just snap out without a lot of force. I haven't had a need to replace my own bulbs though, so tread lightly here...

That is what I attempted. Without it coming off easily, I decided to stop before I broke something. :)

Mine is dim at best but I've never attempted to replace the bulb(s).

BTW, I haven't forgotten your parts manual - my CD burner is dead at the moment.

Jerry -- Here's what's in the 587/90 SPC for the US version TR Upper Console. Unfortunately, it's not the best illustration for conveying details about assembly/disassembly IMO. I'd wonder if maybe you needed to remove the three switches (6,7,8) to separate item 14 from item 13?

Tom -- Are you saying that Item 11 snaps out downward from Item 14? If so, wouldn't a new bulb then be directly fitted to item 11? Or are you saying that by removing the screw then all of item 1 can be removed?

New Issue (but related) -- How about fixing/improving the other (flourescent?) lamp and/or lens? Anyone done anything in that area? Mine barely glows.

My flourescent bulbs are pretty dim as well. I tried to remove the lense a while back but stopped before I broke something. I tried putting two small flat blade screw drivers in the slots at the back side of the large flat lense to pry it open. Nothing budged.

I hope someone cracks this code and posts how to open it up and where to buy the bulbs.

Like most auto manufactures, there always seems to be a small trick in removing interior pieces and parts.

Removing the swivel dome light is very easy. Using the drawing that is posted(item #11), it just pops out with a little help from your finger nails or a very small screw driver. Actually, once you have started to pry it out with a small screw driver, then use your hands/fingers to pull it down and out at a slight angle. There are two spring clips attached to the under side of the light, which line-up with two small slots in the head-liner piece, so it will give a little resistance when coming out, but make sure you have the spring clips alligned with the small slots when re-installing.

You will also notice, once the lamp assembly is removed, there is a phillips head screw which basically holds the upper console piece in place. I have removed several of these, including my own, in order to "hard-wire" the Valentine radar detector. This is also very similar to the dome lights in the 550 Maranello.

    Have fun......

Chiaro - simply "bow" the rectangular dome cover downards in its middle until the peripheral plastic tabs come free from the black holder. Use a screwdriver to wedge and gently bow the plastic. Once the plastic rectangular dome is removed, you can unscrew the entire unit and lower it from the ceiling. I did this as 512professore did to hard wire my Valentine.

Thanks Jim - That was the way to go - I see how part # 11 comes out now, but I couldn't get to it. Bowing the plastic part was a bit scary, but finally the tabs popped out. Here are some pics :

Pic # 1 - There are actually several small lights that make up the dome light. 91tr - Several of yours must be burned out or not making contact anymore if yours is barely glowing.

Pic # 2 - I needed to replace the telescoping light. There is a little light holder that twists out of back of the telescope part - The little piece I have in my hand - I already removed the small light from it.

Pic # 3 - The pesky little tabs.

Pic # 4 - The burned out telescope light that needed replacing.

    Thanks again Jim and 512Professore.

Thanks for posting the pics Jerry -- very useful. I'll check those bulbs -- I certainly wouldn't mind it if the stock dome light worked well.

Hi, this is an old thread, but it helped me alot, thank you.

As you are all aware, the interior light is very dull. When I removed the centre console on the roof lining, I noticed the plastic that holds it in place had lost its structure, where the main screw holds it into the roof. It also had rivets and glue.

I noticed despite only 4 lights in the dome working, that the unit was very very hot. So if someone is working on the car with the door open and battery connected, it may not be a good environment in there.

After I work a way to fix the housing, I think I wll put LED lights in, like I did with the doors. They should be brighter and not get as hot.

Has this happened to anyone else?

You may wish to consider using LED replacement bulbs, then you never need to deal with this issue again.

I replaced the stock festoon lights with festoon LEDs from Super Bright LEDs (4210-CWHP6 - $ 14.95 each). They have 6 very bright LEDs per bulb.

I was thinking about relocating the original festoon light holders and adding additional holders with LED lights thinking that I could have 10 LED lights in the overhead. But went to local hardware store and picked up a piece of clear plexiglass to replace the white plexiglass for additional light with less work. Other members have left the white cover and cut round holes in the black plexiglass cover. I went for the more stock look. Do a search in the TR / 512TR model section.

The idea of changing to plexi is a good one, and I saw your previous posts on the LED lights and it is what triggered me to doing this. How much difference is there. I thought the lights were the issue combined with the dark shroud. Interesting.

What I find interesting is that the picture in Post #1 shows a white rectangle that is backlit.
My TR does not have that. The plastic is (was) nearly solid black all the way across and when lit only showed a slightly lighter black where the lights were.

It wouldn't have mattered what kind of bulb I changed to, it would have been too dark.
That's why I drilled the two round holes in the black part.
(In the second picture you can see the faint rectangular outline. That's as bright as it got!)

Same here -- the bulbs aren't the primary problem on mine either since the "lense" is virtually opaque ;)

Anybody else got the the same setup as that photo in post #1? Jerry, is the rectangular area cut out like Spasso's circles?
