Michael F. and I are going to do a twilight drive to (or around) Lake Okeechobee tomorrow night. If anyone is interested in meeting up post it here. BT
What time will you be leaving . I wont be home from work until 8 PM so it might be too late. My A/C motor on my home a/c broke. I think it got fried in the storm this afternoon. I'll need to drive around and keep cool if the repairman doesnt show up by tommorrow!
Fun time last night doing one lap of the Okeeburgring.... 4 hours, 200 ish miles, a few ghettos... BT
nice BT, glad you had fun. who made it out? did you drive the 348 or ginetta? hows your new toy project coming along???
Just me and Michael F. It was fun running the 348's side by side through the gears down the beeline hwy. Unfortunately Michael informed me that his battery light came on just before he got home, so he gets to buy some jack stands and a floor jack today. I'll post the pictures tomorrow or Monday. Lots of bugs, a few frogs, and one larger animal all paid the ultimate price on the drive last night. The toy project is not going to happen. It was too much of a challenge for me mechanically, and the builder was nice enough to let me just back out of the deal. BT
Nice brisk drive. Lot's 'O Bugs. Two 348's ripping through the country. Stopping to take a picture and getting absolutey swarmed by whatever those things were. Looked like something out the bible. Water that smells like ass to clean the windshields and were are off for the rest! Several frogs and either a turtle or an armadillo.... Definately not for the feint of heart. I had a blast!
Yes, I forgot the nasty windshield washing smell. My shoes got some, now they need a wash. Oh, and the hills of Lake O (State Road 720) were hilarious! Granted, they are only 2-3 feet high, but you go over several every second! BT
Here we go.... Getting ready to leave Palm Beach Gardens. Whoa, that Scion looks large! BT Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
First we head out the Beeline Hwy to SR 76 and then west to Lake O. at Port Mayaca. Two kids that were passengers in a truck followed us to the edge of the lake and wanted a picture next to the Ferraris. A swarm of little green bugs converged on us. It was only a sign of more to come! BT Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
As the sun was setting we went clockwise around the lake through Belle Glade, Clewiston, etc... Made a few wrong turns into ghetto areas, and dead ends. All in good fun though! A pit stop on the edge of Clewiston for a soda / Red Bull and a stretch. Then lots of fun stuff in the pursuit of driving enjoyment. Some dippity roads, lots of small bugs, a few frogs, and one armadillo or possum maybe that went airborne after I hit it. I was sure the front air dam was cracked, but I guess the higher velocity made the damage occur solely to the critter. An intermediate stop to wash some bugs off with the most disgusting water known to Florida! Yuck! Then a stop with much better washing fluids, and much cheaper fuel. Premium was only $3.98. One station we passed had regular for $3.62! Locally the regular is about $3.89. After passing about 250,000 trailer homes for retirees, we followed the east side of the lake and went back on S.R. 76 to the Beeline. Total time was about 4 hours or so. 3 stops, no problems, no police! Then a nice wash down on the vehicles and the day was done. looks like im missing out! mike, you getta fcar now and you find a whole new wardrobe! cars look awesome!!! i think they are screaming for 355 wheels...but thats ONLY IMHO
i was thinking of doing a trip like this with some of the import crowd, not a boring drive then was it? I was afraid that people would get bored and pissed off at me if i did this.
Compared a mountain drive or (I imagine) track time it was kind of boring, but that is south Florida! Import guys would definitely get pissed at road 720, lots of dips that would scrape up a lowered tuner vehicle. Plenty of fast areas that were relatively deserted in the early evening. A beach drive can be scenic, but I think this is the best roads for driving quickly that I have seen in south Florida. The whole area smells like manure, so if you have good A/C, put it on recirc. We drove with the targa tops off, at least the leather could sbsorb some more cow smell... It was a quicker drive than I expected, and more fun than most drives I have been on down here. BT
Iv done that drive soo many times that I often get bored of it myself. If you get a good group of cars together, it can be fun since the roads are wide open and usually pretty empty. Gives you a chance to stretch your legs.
Epilogue: I took the Ginetta in for some service today to fix a leak in the fuel tank. I was happy to get rid of the stench of gasoline in the garage. I came home from work, and the smell of gas was gone. However, it was replaced with the stench of something rotten. I got a work light out and found the culprit. A partially dried out frog in the fresh air intake duct. Using a long screwdriver I scraped it out, and threw it to rot in the yard. Now I think I have the last of the remnants of the drive off the car... BT
You guys are a bit closer to start on the east coast, it takes a good hour just to get to the lake from the Fort Myers area... I think we might plan a backroads adventure to Orlando starting in Everglades City at the Rod and Gun Club though.
