Anyone know were I can get a match for the drivers side mirror glass? I can have one made from a local glass shop, but all they have is clear, the originals have a blueish tint to them. Ferrari wants $282.00 for just the mirror glass.
I can get it made for about $20.00 for clear.

Call around. Many glass shops stock rear view mirror replacement glass. You can also use grey tinted mirror that matches a little closer. Most glass shops will have grey in 1/8" mirror.

Funny - one of my winter projects is to replace the passenger side mirror with a convex piece. I am tired of being surprised when changing lanes, etc. Never thought it would be an issue to find a similar glass. Please let us know if/when you find a solution.

In my search today, one of the glass shops had two idea's. One was to get the new clear mirror tinted, since there is so many color choices with that stuff. The second was to get a blue tinted piece of glass and have it silvered to make a mirror.

I think I will tint it, I am going to stop by some places tomorrow with the old and new mirror to try and match them up.

Isnt most automotive mirror embossed? As I understand it regular mirror has a backing that is succeptible to moisture and will flake off.

Could be. I will ask. I had a clear one made and it looks good but its clear. They said they use the same mirror I got for many cars without any problems. Also I do not take my car out in the rain, and I rarely wash it with water, more of a wipe down and detail.

Come to think of it, they use the same mirror in bathrooms and it holds up pretty good, although I have seen were an old mirror starts to go bad in the corners.

Also, that is the reason why I am changing the original, the backing was coming off after some fluid got on it, so it seems like the Ferrari mirror is the same.................

I had a vehicle with a mirror that had a fluid sandwiched between the mirror and a backing (I believe the purpose was dimming night glare), and when the mirror broke you could see the fluid dripping out. Is the TR mirror made the same way?

No, it looks like a standard mirror. Then they use the stickiest double sided tape I have ever seen to sandwich a heating element in, and then its sticks to a plastic bracket. Need to use dynamite to get them apart.

Tint guy said no good. The tinting material they use is intended for inside the vehicle, it will not last in the exposed weather.

    Back to the drawing board.

I know that you can get replacement mirrors for a late model BMW760 from a glass shop that has a blue tint. Could you cut one down out of that mirror? I may even have an extra one in my garage somewhere. What are your dimensions?

I found the box, but the mirror must have gotten broken in the move. The company is Burco www.burcoinc.com, and the part number is 6127. I think the mirror was around $30.

After a few weeks of trying to find a replacement I ordered one from Eurospares. They sent the whole deal! The glass the heating element and the connections and the backing plate.................life is good!

But how do i get the retaining clips back on after I snap the new backing plate in, is there a trick?

    Anyone do this before?

Ken -- Could you post some photo of the backside of the mirror assembly and the inside of the mirror housing please (and anything else related to how it comes apart/goes together). My LH side up-down motor isn't running, and I'd like to go in an make some measurements to figure out if it's a motor problem or an upstream electrical problem (I made electrical measurements at the switch and everything is OK there) -- TIA.

Thanks very much Ken -- but I can't help with your dilemma. It sure looks to me like the black piece on the back of the mirror shouldn't be bonded to the mirror yet -- i.e., the black piece has the three access holes to put the philips-head screws in and out (if the mirror wasn't attached). I haven't looked at mine lately, but my recollection is that you really can't tilt the mirror enough to get in back behind it to remove/install those clips -- but, now that I have a little better idea about how it works from your excellent photos, I'll have another look and see if, with a special tool, maybe it could be done.

The only other thing I can think of is to talk to an auto glass place -- maybe they can separate the black piece from the mirror, so you could put the black piece and clips onto the motor assembly, and then sell you an appropriate double-sided adhesive piece to stick the mirror back onto the black piece. Good luck -- and please let me know how you get it to work.

Thanks again for the photos -- very helpful.

    Steve,

There has to be a way to do it, if the factory mirror comes assembled.

Getting it out is no problem, just put some tape on the mirror housing like I did and pop it out with some popsicle or paint sticks.

I think if you position the clips just right and pop the mirror in and then with a long thin tool slide the clips into position..........maybe you might get them to snap back in.

Could not find a way to install the complete unit. I disassembled it and then it was easy as Steve had suggested.
