    I was looking through the Ferrari Ads and came across the Black '87 TR for $41.9K. It appears to need some work, including a major, although the leak down test done during a recent (12 months ago) PPI looks to be strong (140 / 75 in all cylinders).

    The car has some minor bumps and bruises on the body and interior. Has the typical seat belt track problem (they don't work).

    Looking for some experienced TR owner feedback. Does this seem like a good deal in your eyes or a money pit? My initial thought is there is nothing too bad that I could not handle myself, with the exception of the tensioner bearings and timing belt (local shop could do for $2K-$3K). Rest of a major I can handle myself (plugs, wires, fluids, hoses, clutch).

    Thoughts would be appreciated.

    Maybe less, considering a moajor is 6-8K, plus the other work.

    I continue to think that buying a well maintained example ("the best you can afford") is preferrable to battling the unknowns...

    .... and as for an under $40K Testarossa. Did someone send around a memo that folks are giving TR's away, and I missed it?

    Local FCA member here in Denver is selling his 87 TR Euro, 20K miles....ad is also on FCHAT. $60K, obviously negotiable in this market, but a car maintained and low miles won't venture out of the low to mid-$50's in my opinion.

    A low $40's car + major + unknown gremlins sorting will be in the $50's in a heartbeat.

    Just my $.02.

    $35K? THAT would be a sweet deal until the maintenance bills to get it to a $50K car arrived. I'd still rather have one that is fully maintained and sorted.

    This will be interesting to see if one goes below $40, even needing a major.

    What do you think a well maintained, low mile '87 TR (similar to yours) is worth once its all done over?

    Are you saying the shop will drop the engine, do the belts and tensioners, let you do all of the of the other work (costing THOUSANDS MORE) with the engine sitting out of the car in their shop, then reinstall it and get it running and tuned for JUST 2 or 3K?

    What is their number again?
    A more realistic number would be 7 to 10k to cover ALL of the usual bases and NONE of the deferred maintenance items this car suffer from, add another 20k

    Go buy and well maintained car and save your self getting a pit you can't get out of.

    If you get the car for 35 thats it, its a 35k car, put minor work into it and minor bucks, have a ton of fun with it and thats it. Re-sell it later and re-coupe most or all of your money.

    Not every TR is a perfect example, that does not mean you cant have fun with it.

    I was going to say "just buy the mirror" but didn't want to dampen enthusiastic ideas on your thread.

    ....but you did have to anyways. :)


    I wonder if poor example TR's are being put out there for sale being sold as "desperate buyer" cars. The greed of a fantastic buy blinds you to car's details. All one see's is the low price and that the buyer is in control. (dubious seller laughing )

    I WHOLEHEARTEDLY AGREE. These "low ball" cars would have been $40K + fixins' when the real nice ones were in the $70's. And they've stayed right where they were, and now seem like "bargains" in the midst of the fire sale. Don't let "red fever" get the best of you.

    Still buy the best example you can afford, and you will not be sorry.

    This BS bottom feeding, and everyone posting the lowest price they've seen for car xyz is pure crap. The Ferrari market for solid cars, is still solid. (Yes, as with any luxury, a bit pressured by the market) but c'mon to think that everyone in F-Car land is rushing to be the first one in line to "give their car away" is BS.

    LOL, I did not pay the $282.00 that they wanted here in the US, I went to Eurospares and got it for $85.00. My car is different, I want to make my car the best it can be. If I had another inexpensive one I would use it as a daily driver and beat the piss out of it!

    Well, I'm not so sure about this observation. There are more Ferrari's for sale now than I can ever remember over the last 20 years, or so. The laws of supply and demand still hold true and many Ferrari still don't sell at current perceived reduced "asking prices". Granted, the "best cars" still bring a premium, but with the abundance of cars on the market, that premium is greatly reduced...

    Yes, you are correct in that not everyone is rushing to "give their cars away". Then again, the financial realty of the global marketplace cannot be overlooked...

    David, True. I am mostly reacting to the flurry of folks all too happy to rush to FChat and post the most recent low ball figure they've seen. I don't see anyone posting about the good cars selling for reasonable prices...thats all.

    I guess a routine sale is not anything noteworthy

    I knew of Ralph's Boxer he had and was pleased with his accurate description when I did indeed see the car. I bought another although; a carbed car as his was injected.
    If you can DIY; an older TR can be a phenomenal deal. Probably THE Ferrari to a generation. Not a starter project no doubt but doable to one with experience and more time than money.

    Do not take an older TR to Ferrari of Wherever and expect to walk out cheap.

    Unless the service manager is your brother.

    And he owes you.

    Big time.

    The car was purchased for export overseas, to another country with sky-hi importation taxes on cars. With that, you can put two and two together.


    The car is accurately described. Not too many people, list good condition and entry-level in the same listing. An entry level driver, will not make economic sense, if you want a creme-puff in the end (unless of course the importation taxes are much more than the purchase price of the car). It is a car, that is NOT for everyone.
