Ok folks, Its been a bit quiet on here and in an effort to spice things up here goes: Mountain drive starting up in Feb - weather and roads permitting - dont want salt... meet up at Starbucks on exit 13 off 400... drive up to chevron gas up and head on out. Feb 22 - lunch at Wolf Mtn. March - 7 lunch at Monteluce March - 28 Lunch at Frogtown May - 9th lunch ??? to be announced May 22- overnight drive up to Greenville SC, dinner at Bergamo, stay at Hampton Inn down town... Greenville is a super little town perfect for a nice day of driving. we'll take back roads up and ya'll are on your own on the way back. its 2 hours from Atlanta by 85. so that is what I'm thinking ? any comments? - dates are purely for reference, and can be changed...
Tom...........For the 3/7 drive, we're down in Daytona and won't be back till 3/8 for that event. Great idea on posting as-early-as-possible so folks can plan well in advance. (CANT WAIT). BobR
....Tom.......I know some great open-back-country roads that can take us from "here" up to the GA/SC border w/o much time loss at all when you want to do the Greenville. So the normal Starbucks starting point would be perfect. In-fact I'm sure I could extend that a bit further into SC if need be. A trip up to Highlands would be great for an all-day'r also........... (And as always, when you get these scheduled let me know what I can do to help) BobR
I would suggest a drive to an overnight stay in Ashville, NC...it is a great drive through the mountains and a lot to do when you get there...
I know some great places and roads in Highlands....on the way to Ashville.....are we talking overnighter? How about a nice ride to Vancouver B.C. or Nova Scotia and the Cabot Trail....I hear the open road calling and the revving of engines. Oh Lord, someone stop me. Ciao, George
I would like to do a run during the second week of February [I'll be off that week] during a week day....the roads would be in our sole possession. Any takers? Lunch at the Unicoi Lodge [buffet]
I'm planning on coming up that way for a long weekend in early April. I will try to remember to post a link to the thread when the date is final. Are the temps in the GA / NC mountains okay for summer tires by April 8th or so? BT
Hmmm. That's what I thought. Too bad. I've been playing with my bypass valve and the car sounds absolutely unbelievable. I would love to run it in a tunnel at 8000 rpm!
Oops on the dates... they would all be Saturdays...good spot on the GA tech show... we'll have to move that one around. I'll post more as I get details... lets keep this the thread for "drives" ... Cheers! Tom
I think Tom is trying to work around Sugo's Saturday date [the 21st]. I was wrong, I'm off the 3rd week, not the second. February 18th for a midweek mountain drive should allow for very uncrowded roads/excellent driving conditions [unless we get a tornado, or a torrential rain storm]. I would like to meet up at O'Charley's restaurant [well, it was an O'Charley's last time I drove by it] on 20 just east of 400 [approx 1.5-2.0 miles, if that much]. The address is 3217 Buford Drive. That should be exit 14 off of 400. There is a Starbucks [for the Starbucks diehards in the group] within a minutes walk of O'Charley's. We can meet at 8:30 [empty parking lot] Wednesday morning and leave at 9:00. I'll have maps of the route for everyone. Ciao, George
The distance would be approx. the same as our usual, [I'm guessing 150 - 200 miles round trip] and we should be ready to head home around 1:30 or so, to beat out the rush hour crowd. Ciao, George
While I'm in my posting mode, how about a warm up drive [to the Asheville trip] sometime in March to the Highlands. Temps. should be more tolerable than in February, with crowds still being marginal in numbers. I don't think snow tires would be necessary [could be wrong, have been before, won't be the last time]. Is anyone game for that? Are there any takers? Ciao, George
I would love to go to Ashville and spend the night up there. Once there is a solid date for that trip I would call up there and look into some hotels, maybe a group rate of some sort. Does anyone have a favorite room up there?
Bump & update from Tom's original post: First drive of 2009.......final destination Wolf Mountain Winery.....Feb21 (Saturday). Meet-up at the Starbucks on exit 13 off 400 @ 830, leave @ 9am as we've done before.
I need to know how many to make lunch reservations for... so please RSVP here by Feb 19. Thanks ya'll! Tom
