The rental company owner got a call from the Honolulu Police Dept. He was asked to come down to one of the parking lots at the end of Waikiki to retrieve one of his cars. When the owner arrived at the scene, he saw a group of cops standing next to his TR looking at a small video camera. They had caught three visitors from Australia that had imbibed in one or five too many Fosters and they had been burning do-nuts in the parking lot. In order to impress all the folks back home, they had also been taking video of all the proceedings.

The owner brought his TR back to the lot and the cops did their thing with the Aussies. The TR did not have any visible damage and seemed to survive the whole affair, but within a week or two it suffered differential failure. The differential housing split open and pushed itself right out of the aluminum gearbox case.

That was the first time that I had a TR differential apart. I was not impressed. For the power and weight of the car, it seemed like a pretty weak design.

Keep the stories coming! Lets hope the former owner of Ferrari Rentals writes a book some day about this story and 101 other ways to destroy an exotic car.

Thanks for the encouragement. I wasn't sure whether the stories were providing entertainment or merely irritating people. I am sure the owners of the several rental companies have many more stories than I can remember, but I wouldn't be surprised if they would prefer to forget all the disasters. ;>)

I remember the White Testarossa available at Ferrari Rentals - I rented it for a day. LOVED the car! I had been on Oahu on-business and stayed at the Ilima, so I walked Waikiki often. The TR was sitting off-street with a red Mondial and a few other cars but I had my eye on the White/Tan TR...the Rental place offered me a 'sweetheart' rate to get the TR out of the lot - I think they charged me the going-rate for the Mondial, which was $300 less than the regular TR rental, plus $1 per mile with the first 50 miles free. When I left the lot, I noticed that the odometer was broken! I had free gasoline on the company card, unlimited miles, and the whole weekend to explore the Ferrari.

I drove the TR all over the island - I rented on a saturday late-afternoon, for a late-afternoon sunday return. That gave me all day to head up to King Kamehameha highway, H1/H2/H3, North Shore, and anywhere in-between. Sunrise on sunday through the Dole Plantations, a roadside coffee shop in Wahiawa....fond memories! Gobs of power, very comfortable cruising....the only issue I had was that the key broke-off in the passenger door lock. I was given two keys, so I wasn't bothered too much. The car was worth every penny. I think I saw it for-sale at a used car lot near the Eisenhower overpass a few years later - FerrParts bought it, and promptly stripped it for parts (the interior was baked, and so was the paint).

I wish I could have bought that car.....

Thanks very much for your story about ejoying Hawaii and your time with the TR. There were quite a few cars that came and went through the rental companies. They arrive shiny, new, and pristine and it doesn't take long before they get to be tired ,old beaters. Some did get into the hands of private owners that brought them back to good condition, others simply ended up as parts cars.

Thanks for your tale and thanks for not ripping the differential out of the thing when you had it!! ;>)

Does anyone know if you can still rent exotic cars in Waikiki? or are they all gone? Im going there in July! I remember when I was living in Honolulu (Waikiki) in -97 and the car rental place had a yellow Lamborghini Diablo a white Ferrari Testarossa and two red Ferrari 328 GTS cars. All rather used and beaten up and they later traded in the yellow Lamborghini and the white Testarossa and some other cars for a great looking silver Diablo VT at JNAG La Collezione Nicolai. I later returned in -99 and the beautiful silver Diablo was now somewhat beaten up with some scratches and door dings etc. They also had a custom red Ferrari 328 GTS at that time that later showed up on eBay (and of course without any history that it used to be a rental). I was then back in 2002 and and that time they had a black 328 GTS that I believe later ended up in the hands of a Ferrai chatter. They also had a blue (or a yellow) 360 at the same time.

Also - for you who know the island - any good suggestions for bars and clubs?

    Hi Mike

As far as I know, the only Ferrari that is for rent in Waikiki is a red 355 spider and I don't know how much longer even that will be available. The number of visitors here is way down and many of the business that are dependent on toruism are suffering. If you are interested in checking on the car, PM me and I will give you a phone number to call.

As far as bars and clubs: no shortage there. You will be able to find almost any kind of music and food that you want. There are many free publications that will give you a big range of options. One good source is the "Honolulu Weekly". It is a free newspaper that is widely available and it gives comprehensive coverage of all the happenings that week.

    Sowest,

Thanks for the stories. They are of particular interest to me as I used to vacation in HI twice a year and was always amazed at the available rental cars. Its good to hear the back story.

My memory may be a bit cloudy, but I remember being there while the were shooting the film Joe vs. The Volcano. There was a street blocked off for shooting by the police...They has Buick GNXs as patrol cars? Is my memory correct?

    Hi Pettit

Yes, the rental car business was interesting. I am sure the people who ran the rental companies have many more tales of woe than the ones that I was part of. They had a very wide variety of cars. I only saw the Ferrari end of things. It is good to hear that you were able to enjoy some time here. Please come back!! Everbody could use the business. ;>)

Your memory is good. Many of the patrol officers here use personally owned cars. They do get compensated for their use by the city. The choice of car is up to the individual officer, so it wasn't that they all had GNX's, but I do remember seeing at least one with a blue light on top. A popular model now is the Mustang. As you can imagine, this makes keeping an eye out for the police a bit harder while driving. One developes the habit of scanning the rooflines of cars in the rearview mirror, looking for the light on top.

I would never use my personal car to arrest drunks etc. having somebody barf in your own car would put me over the edge. But actually after just a little while in Hawaii you start to notice the police very easily.

    HI

Thanks very much for your note of encouragement. I haven't posted here much lately because time always seems so short and, the truth is, I kind of used up the most interesting stories. Most of the rental repairs were pretty mundane. It was just cranking out the clutches, water pumps, belt changes, etc...etc. I really was surprised to see that a Hawaii section had been added and I wanted to help in providing some interest and content. I duplicated some of the posts in the more heavily viewed sections, such as 3X8/Mondial and classic, and got a much stronger response.

Also, being the dim bulb that I am, I decided to fix the A/C in my Quattroporte and have been posting about the progress on that project in the Maserati section. It has been the classic case of "while you are in there" and putting in more time and money than the car is worth.

Well, I do have some more rental car stories that might have some general interest and I will try to get organized soon.

I see that you are in Hawaii. Are you on Oahu?

    Aloha
    Larry

    Hi

I don't think that the police put any people in their own cars. They do not have cages in them. If they need to transport one of our outstanding citizens, they will call for a blue and white.

It is a little harder to see the police cars now. They have changed to some very small and thin light bars. Some of them have SUV's with factory roof racks and the light bar is very difficult to pick out against the roof rack.

    Aloha

Hi Larry, I'll look out for the stories on the other sections, thank you! Yes, I'm on Oahu, over near Ala Moana/Ward.

About the patrol cars, that is something I've noticed. Officers in the private cars just call in one of the beat up Impalas to do the dirty work. I must admit, the number of officers with Mustang Cobras is kind of cool. Very Mad Max like. A car enthusiasts is a car enthusiasts no matter the occupation.

The afternoon that I arrived back from Desert Storm, I was busted by HPD driving an IROC-Z while doing 109mph on the H-3 at the overlook right before the front gate at the Kaneohe Marine Corps Air Station. I was racing an officer's wife in another Camaro, he only gave me a ticket since I was shameing Camaro's everywhere buy winning in my 82 Malibu. ;)

Don't feel too bad, these cars are known for weak differentials. The fact that they were doing burnouts, dumping the clutch, etc. didn't help matters.

Cops in IROC-Z's! Now that must've been a sight to behold.

I had a stock 88 Mustang 5.0GT back in the day and one late night I lined up against my buddies 66 GTO on a road in Bethesda Maryland. Even with a good launch I was dusted before making it to the other side of the intersection. No sooner had I shut it down one of Montgomery County's finest was pulling me over. He laughed at me and ultimately gave me a warning for "being dumb enough to line up with a GTO in the first place."

    Go the Aussie\'s

\"Aussie Aussie Aussie, Oih Oih Oih!]

So what happened to them and the car, any charges, who paid for the repairs etc.

    Where\'s the video footage?

Its normal to treat a hire car [rental] like that, maybe Ferrari\'s are not cut out for that sort of treatment...

    Cheers

    Hi

I don't know what happened to the Aussies. It is very likely that very little happened to them. They might have gotten some sort of citation, but it isn't something that they would be put in jail for. I imagine that they got on the plane at the end of their stay along with the camera and video and never looked back. Hawaii needs the visitors as it is a huge part of the economy so no one is really out to see people return home with bad stories to tell.

The owner of the rental company paid for the repairs. I won't say that this kind of abuse to the rental cars was "normal", but it was not unusual. I really don't know how the fellow that owned the business kept his sanity. People would routinely damage a car, pay for the damages, as per the rental agreement, with their credit card, then go back home and call the credit card company and contest the charges. I don't think the credit card companies ever ruled in favor of the rental company.

Very interesting stories. I was in Hawaii in 1998 (with my now ex-wife), and I saw the Ferrari rental place in Waikiki. I wanted to inquire about renting the Mondial for a day, but the wife wasn't having any of it "you have one at home!"

***** didn't understand that my car was at home, NOT in Hawaii (which would have been a nice way to see the island).

I'm heading back this Thanksgiving with the new wife (who likes cars), but alas, I'm sure no one is renting a TR anymore. No interest in the newer Fcars, a TR or even Mondial sounds nice.

    Hi Jet-X

I am pretty certain that there are no Ferraris to rent on any of the islands anymore. The "last man standing" is a company that is in the same location as the old "Ferrari Rentals". I think they may have some Corvettes and Porsche. I have not been through Waikiki for a month or two, but I think that they are still there.

I just drove through Waikiki today. The Aloha gas station on Kalakaua Ave just past Ala Moana Blvd has a red 996 or 7 Porsche Cab, Chrysler Prowlers and yellow Vette's for rents. No Ferraris.

I just saw this thread and had to add my story.

    I rented a 308 in Lahaina, Maui in Jun 03. Here's a photo....

I got engaged that night so it turned out pretty good. The car was kind of a mess, actually it was the reason I didn't buy a Ferrari for another 5 years.

    Hi

Thanks for the story and the picture. Congratulations on the engagement!! Yes, those cars lead a very rough life. I often thought that it might be disappointing for someone to have their first Ferrari experience in one of those workhorses.

For a while, there was actually two places that rented exotics there. One was very close to Lahaina Town and the fellow that had Ferrari Rentals in Waikiki also had an outlet near Lahaina. It was out on the road that went by the small airport in West Maui.
