Replacement radios for 430

Care to quote rough prices for those units?

Do they all have blueooth, GPS and iPod connection?

 

the alpine is 1000.00 + bt 180.00 + ipod 30.00 nav 450.00 + labor
the kenwood is @ 1300.00 for all + labor
the pioneer is last years model and they haven't announced a replacement yet.

You can upgrade it with a better Becker unit, they have Bluetooth(up to four 'phones) sat nav and iPod cable. I pay around 500 euro's for them. It's a straight plug-n-play fit, it looks completely original and you won't end up with a big square display blocking your air vents

 

Eddie, does that becker tune am/fm properly for USA? Does that price include USA maps? Thanks/

Could you please post a link to the Becker unit you refer to?

Also, do you know if the original 6 Cd changer can be retained or does it need to be upgraded?

 

I will post up some info on the unit when I get into the workshop. You can't retain the original c.d shuttle if you use the iPod cable, it plugs into the new unit instead of it, but full control including all the playlists are via the head unit. As for the u.s maps I'm not sure as I fit euro units, and as I'm out in Cyrus the nav function doesn't work anyway (there is no gps cartography done for the island as yet!) I've fitted a few now and customer results are very positive, the Bluetooth is easy to use and the whole unit seems far easier to navigate through it's functions than the earlier units.

 

I just replaced the stock unit in the 430(nav, bluetooth, ipod) with a kenwood no-flip up, an amp and sub. Still no bueno. Taking it back to replace the head unit w a pop-up screen, another sub(2 total), and a bigger amp, and better door speakers. Im up to $6000 after all this. A lot of labor since everything is getting done twice. The kenwood unit is actually less intuitive than the factory unit.

 

Anyone want to sell me their OEM 430 radio? I bought one for my 456, now I'm trying to find one for my 355.

 

I'll jump on the band wagon! I'd like an OEM radio for '86 328 GTS.

 

As I understand, 328's didnt come with a radio, so no original equipement, hence no OEM. A period correct unit; yes, blaupunkt or alpine. Installed by dealer.

 

I'm not sure it would be a plug and play sort of thing for a 328. For the 456, it was a 10 minute install to swap out the older 456 radio for a new 430 radio with an IPOD connector in the glove box. All the plugs have been the same for a while.

Still no takers on selling me their 430 radio?

 

Just a little "heads up" on using the iPod in your car - The app store is getting more and more true navigation apps (downloaded maps etc) on an almost daily basis - I decided rather than a dedicated unit for the F-car I'd give one of 'em a try - So far (early testing) it's proven friggin' awesome - Definitely as good as the H/W solutions - I've got a thread going in tech toys:

Now, a question - I just have the regular Becker in my car (360 btw), no CD changer - If I were to replace that with one that accepts an iPod input does it then use the cars speakers for speaking the directions? How about the phone? I do have a BT earpiece, but really don't like it very much - It would be cool if a voice call was routed thru the car's speakers - doable? [Even if it needed an additional mic at my end?]

My 456 radio which came out of an 08 430 did not work with my iphone. It only worked with my 80GB Ipod. The Ipod and the CD changer use the same port in the back so it only works with one of those, not both at once.
So the answer would be that no, your iphone will not play through the speakers if you connect it to the Ipod connector. However it will if you use it with the BT connector. I'm not sure if your 360 becker has BT built in, but I don't think so.

 

Hmmm - I believe you (!) but that doesn't make any sense!.... At this stage it is an iPod - Music is just being pumped down the same cable. Anyone else had this issue?

Understood - As noted, I don't have the changer, so that's OK.

I haven't checked, but am pretty sure mines a little too old to support BT.

So, and with apologies for somewhat hijacking the thread, my Q becomes; Can I/what do I need to get to achieve what I want to do - Play the iPhone, iPod and navi voice commands (if even possible?) thru the cars speakers?

You are correct, NO OEM for the 308s either.


Oh, I can save you some money.

The newer (Ferrari) Beckers will not fit in the slot, at least not in my '81 308 they won't. They around 2mm too big in both high and width dimentions.


So, I guess I'll stick with the OEM heavy metal band, Main-lined Horse.

 

It didnt work with mine, but that doesn't mean that it will not work with any of them. I can't help but think that the new ones will support the iphone. The Ipod connector looks at your Ipod like a big CD changer. I had to make a bunch of playlists since searching through artists took forever. It was only made to work with a few artists or songs like a CD changer is made for a set number of CD's. My 10,000 cd's would take hours to go through if I wanted an artist past the B's or C's. I'm sure someone can explain this better than I have.

 

The bluetooth will work with the iphone and run the sound from the phone through the speakers... The one problem is you will need to get the microphone as that stays in the car the radio was taken out of/ the next problem is the stock becker in a new 430 spyder with bluetooth doesnt function while driving as there is too much background noise from exhaust etc. The road noise etc is soo loud above 30 mph that whoever you are talking too will not be able to hear you. So going through all the trouble + money to put in the becker to have a cdc style ipod interface and an almost worthless bluetooth interface and turn by turn nav unit might be a reason to think about an aftermarket unit. Keep in mind putting a new radio in doesnt require any cutting so the stock radio can go back in when you sell the car.
