Wow he just lost it. The road looks dry.

    What a tragedy.

I am going to blame the driver on this one.
He was not going too fast and the curvature of the track was feasible to execute.

He began turning late and turned into the wrong lane. Had he gone in the outer lane, this would have never happened.

Just thank god its not a Lambo. It would have caught fire just for fun and burned the whole city

They've got a bit crazy with the painted crosswalks here in Santa Barbara last few years, many are as slick as greasy wet pavement to accelerate on. With a slight bend seen in the pictures, I can see how an acceleration(unwarranted seemingly given the venue) could throw the car into a spin, especially in cold or damp conditions. Pretty hard hit.

Looked like lousy driving skills to me... Accelerated too hard, lost rear, didn't countersteer, and ultimately crashed into oncoming car. Too many people that have the means to purchase these high powered sports cars have zero driving skills and get into trouble/accidents. Look at the statistics, most exotic car crashes are single car accidents.

+1. I think the 458's traction control system could easily compensate for any traction differential caused by the white crossing marker stripes.

    Aboslutely.

There are too many unknown factors to us. What the condition of the road was like truly, what condition were the car's tires, or even - did he gun it to in the middle of that turn...etc etc...

The rear was coming around before he got into the paint.
I didn't see any countersteering but who knows from this vid.
    Poor oncoming motorist

The guy driving the 456 can't drive well enough for a 456 and is out of his depth. Looks like the back end started to go and he just sh*ts himself and sticks both feet out and locks-up and hits the other car. I am surprised that the oncoming driver does not take any avoiding action, maybe he was texting at the time and not looking at the road!!

That car slides so quickly and unexpectedly I doubt many people would have caught it - and given how greasy the road appears I doubt it would have saveable. Let's get it straight, Ferrari drivers (or any other supercar owners) are not of an above average driving capability, they can just afford an above average car.

As for the driver of the other car - this would have happened so quickly and unexpectedly I doubt they would have had much if any time to react.

Ferrari and Porsche will burn just the same....let off the gas in a 2 wheel drive mid engine car on a turn and its easy to swap ends, even Awd doesnt stop it..ive done it a few times on the track myself...

I'm not so sure the road was dry. In the second camera angle, after the crash it looks wet.

Wet road, greasy intersection, a little extra power, unknown tire condition.

Because the driver was behind the wheel at the time of the crash, it was undoubtedly his fault. That being said, it could have happened to anybody. It didn't seem like his driving was out of line at all and, even if he downright punched the accelerator, he wasn't being reckless in any way. The road looked downright greasy, which, in my opinion, was probably the main contributing factor to the accident.

I don't understand why when something like this happens, people like to jump on the driver for "being reckless" or "being an idiot." It seemed like a freak accident; had the road not been slick, the speed at which he was going would have been fine for the radius of that turn. Even if he had countersteered, the rear let loose so quick there was probably nothing he could do!

Remember, it's easy to sit here and say, "he should've countersteered quicker" or "not accelerated through the turn," but when it comes down to it, how sure are you that you would have saved it, or even had the peace of mind to not get on the gas through the turn in the first place. We buy Ferraris to have fun, and I'm sure many owners on this board would have taken the turn the same way, or at least similarly. It would have caught anyone off guard! If he would have known what was going to happen, then I'm sure he would have approached things differently. All I'm saying is life happens fast! Don't put him on the spot; just be glad it didn't happen to you! -kevin

The driver of the 456 is a 24 year old employee of a car dealership. He was shuttling the vehicle on consignment to a different location. Very little, or no experience at all driving Ferraris or high power rear wheel drive vehicles.
Behind the wheel of the small VW car that got hit, was a 31 year old lady, Cecilia. She is still in ICU. Doctors expect her to recover from leg, head and chest injuries, but she will remain in the hospital for at least 4 more months.
