As you can tell from my sig, I'm a big fan of the 250 series of F-cars. OCTANE, a Brit magazine devoted to (mostly) vintage sports and racing cars
has a multi-page story in the Oct '04 issue on the many different Ferraris that used the three-liter Colombo V12 from the 250 Mille Miglia of '55 to the 250GT Lusso of '64.

I enjoyed seeing an overview and comparison of these cars. I'm not sure all the information is correct though. They state the Lusso chassis was the same as the GTO except for the more forward placement of the engine. Wouldn't it be more accurate to say that both Lusso and GTO used the 250SWB chassis with a few mods?

OCTANE is very worthwhile if you're into vintage cars of the 50s, 60s and 70s including Ferraris. $7.95USD @ Border's.

The same magazine confused me in the origin of the engines in the 250 Europa (1953) versus the 250 GT Europa (1955). Which one is the Colombo V12 and which one the Lampredi designed V12 3 litre? They claimed that the 250 Europa has the long block engine and the 250 GT Europa the small block V12, but then assign both engines to Lampredi.....

I read 3 pages of that article 2 nights ago before i fell asleep (i was mad tired) and found 3 spelling/grammar errors. Thats one of my pet peeves, errors in a magazine article. Its a decent featrure but they could have more info on each car

This article was an embarrassment to read. There were many factually incorrect statements and lots of places where the author had inserted "???" as a placeholder for information to be looked up later. (i.e. "there were ??? lussos made"). It's as if the author wrote the entire piece the night before they went to press, and submitted it before going back and re-inserting the missing information.

It did contain some great photos, though.

That was the big surprise to me, also. Usually Octane has great quality, so it was a major disappointment that the article was unfinished.

I wonder if maybe the wrong version got to the printers by accident?

Just finished it last night. VERY dissapointed. Spelling errors and "???" everywhere. I think its very likley they sent out the wrong version to the printers. Its obvious no one looked at it before it was sent off.

Great photos and a lousy article. I never considered that the wrong copy went to the printers but that would explain the typos, etc. Hey Andys250gt, welcome to Fchat!

Just received my new November subscription issue of Octane which contains an apology for the problems with the 250 article right up front. The wrong files WERE sent to the printers. The correct files are available on the www.octane-magazine.com in .pdf format. Or you can get it via email, or call or write the editorial office and they will fax or post the correct version to you.

Octane is a very classy magazine, and I wondered about the article.

I wish CBS News would be as diligent as Octane.

BTW, there's a nice story about the Aston Martin DB-5 V-8 prototype and Stirling Moss and David Coulthard drive the Mercedes Benz SLRs old and new. I think it's a terrific magazine.

Should this thread be moved to vintage?

Hmm, maybe I'm thick, but I could not find the .pdf version of the article on their site. Surely you do not have to have subscribed to see the right version?, after all I could have just paid money for their mag!

    I guess I'll have to email them ... ;)

Octane is a perfect magazine as it covers great cars both old and new, plus personalities, events and also some other stuff like classic bikes and watches.

    Currently my favourite read.

I bought the mag here in London from a normal store and it has no '???' marks in it. As mentioned above, it seems a problem with the US printer as the UK edition seems fine.

    Cheers

I bought my edition during a stopover in Heathrow in September, and it also contained the flaws. So they may have gotten a revised article inseted in a second printing.

"Sent wrong article to printers", as they claim? Hmmm. . . I personally doubt it - even the highlighted captions were flawed.

    My personal favorite:

Octane had this to say about the 250 Mille Miglia, in a highlighted caption:
    'Pully here 3-4 deck fyufxuyfuyfxyfxuyfxfxuyfuyxxfyfuyfxuyfuuyxfyxfuyxfuyxfuyxfuyxfuxyuxffuyxuyxugxugxigxiugiixuf.'

High praise indeed. I couldn't have said it better myself.

My copy had the question marks as well - and I'm living in the Netherlands.

Since I have a subscription to this magazine, the problem might be related to subscription copies only......

haha, I spent about 5 minutes trying to figure out what on earth they meant. In the end I concluded that the author was attempting an onomatopoeic representaition of the engine noise. Seriously.

I didn't even consider an incomplete article theory... That would explain it.
