Fabrice Muamba is speaking, recognises family members and is breathing without a ventilator, Bolton Wanderers have confirmed.

The club described the developments as "positive signs of progress" in a statement released on Monday evening, but added that Muamba remained in intensive care despite the improvements in his condition.

Nonetheless, two friends from the Premier League, Tottenham striker Emmanuel Adebayor and Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien, subsequently confirmed that they had visited him and spoken to him in both English and French.

"Fabrice Muamba remains in intensive care at The London Chest Hospital," the statement read. "He is continuing to show signs of improvement this evening.

"He is now able to breathe independently without the aid of a ventilator. He has also been able to recognise family members and respond to questions appropriately.

"These are all positive signs of progress. However, the medical staff in intensive care will continue to monitor and treat him.

"His family and club would like to thank the media for continuing to respect their privacy at this time."

The midfielder was taken to the hospital on Saturday night after collapsing on the pitch during the first half of an FA Cup tie against Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane.

Muamba underwent several minutes of CPR and defibrillation on the pitch and his heart stopped beating on its own for two hours before his arrival at the hospital.

However, while the 23-year-old remains in intensive care, Muamba's heart is beating without the aid of medication and he is also moving his limbs.

Speaking prior to Bolton's most recent statement, manager Owen Coyle said on Monday: "Today's a day that we wait and hope for continued improvement.

"We are all after the same objective; to see that lovely young man, who has such a fantastic smile. That's what we want to see again.

"When you look through what he's come through in his life already, he's a natural fighter. Also, he's a physically fit young man so I think those two things will be a source of help and encouragement."

Bolton's Premier League match at Aston Villa on Tuesday has been postponed and Blackburn say they will call off Saturday's fixture if requested to do so by the Trotters.

The FA Cup sixth-round tie with Spurs must also be rearranged.

Yes good news indeed. Its been a bit eerie in Bolton for the last few days, everybody talking about it and praying he gets through this . Bolton wanderers are a little family club and its amazing how much support is going towards Fabrice and his family from all over the world. Here's hoping he makes a full recovery and can lead a normal life with his son and fiance. Get well soon Fab!
