This a what it looked like when i pulled off the clutch. There was some kind of fluid or grease at the bottom of it. Second pic is of the clutch pack. What is that assembly called...I am replacing my clutch pack, resurfacing the flywheel and repacking it. What do you all think the grease or fluid is?

    aaron,

looks to me like clutch fluid if its coming from there.

You are pointing to the throw out bearing and there are seals in there that can be replaced if they are blue in colour.

I believe if they are black seals they cannot be replaced and you need a new T/O bearing. Otheres here may know more.

Mine is leaking there now but I need to go back in and check everything.

Given the amount of 'black gunge' around the clutch pack housing - 2nd picture' I would clean & repack the flywheel whilst you have it apart.

The triple shaft seals, another common failure are located inside the shaft that you should see sticking out in the centre of the assembly

Just pull on the splined shaft and you will see them.

    These should be replaced also.

The clutch pack is removed from the flywheel (2nd picture)by removing the 6 hex nuts on the toothed ring gear. Once off, you will see the flywheel attached to the clutch housing.

    Your doing well.

    John

I have searched high and low in the archives for a thread that shows how to remove the release bearing but everything is on the clutch pack. I am assuming that with this goes along something to do with bleeding the lines and all that...I have never bled a brake line before but I am a good listener. Anybody ever had to replace a 'throw out bearing' for a 348? Prices?

Talk to fatbillybob, shanb or turbo_348. They seemd to be the most knowledgable about such things.

Spider348 did an engine out clutch/trans/major engine work last spring. I'd PM him.
